Forgotten!!!!!

Why has such a great/classic Russel flick been left on the shelves to collect dust?

reply

Hardly a classic though, is it? It's an efficient thriller, and, in it's day it was handy as a "first date" movie, but no better or no worse than a bunch of others...

That said, if you want to see a "classic" Kurt Russell movie, you can't beat "The Thing". He was pretty good in that one.

"It's GONE MacReady.....!"

this is far from a classic. i mean its such a typical hollywood cheesy 80s film. thats all it is. hemingway is eye candy, and nothing but. shes a bad actress. the ending is so obvious, and cliche. atleast thats how i feel about it. i just didnt like it at all. though, it had potential, i mean the bad guy was pretty good, and it had potential for an interesting thriller. but alas, it failed miserabley...

TO BE HONEST WITH U,I DON'T KNOW,BECAUSE IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES HE'S DONE.

This is a great movie.

This is the 1st movie in my favorite 'Kurt Russell Great Suspense Thriller' trilogy.

#2 is UNLAWFUL ENTRY
#3 is BREAKDOWN

Is it as good or bad as Load?

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

reply

I think I'd put it at No. 3 on that list. This was entertaining, but I found it implausible. I saw it in the theater in 1985, and I liked it more than I did now.

Man, I saw this movie last month and I thought it was Fantastic (It was on the Mystery Channel on Halloween)! Brilliant Performances from its actors, a compelling storyline and a satisfying ending. The Mean Season is a very underrated Thriller that should be appreciated more than it is.

You Were so Beautiful, before that day. And then I heard what you said... man, that was ugly.

reply

Forgotten is right and it should be. "The Mean Season" was one lousy movie. What's funny is that I had always wanted to see this one because I really enjoy good thrillers. I missed it back in 1985 and never got around to renting it. I just watched it last night (because of my Netfix subscription) and thought this was quite bad. Kurt Russell was solid (he usually is) and Andy Garcia was really good looking in this one. However, this was a "thriller" and I was bored from beginning to end. It was only a tv caliber movie. Mariel Hemingway was not a good actress in this. (I did think Star 80 was good). They needed an actress that had more screen presence. It would not have mattered though. This movied left a lot to be desired. A much better thriller with Kurt Russell was "Breakdown".

I thought it was pretty forgettable too, but I always loved watching Richard Jordan's bad guys (may he rest in peace) and this was one of his creepiest.

Agreed. I thought it was very good too.

I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna`*beep*'wit me!"- Pvt Hudson in Aliens.

It is not forgotten. It is on TV all of the time. More than movies that were bigger successes.

Two things bother me about this film: the first scene in the trailer park (was that the Alan Delour character wearing something resembling a fat suit? I thought so, but the characters acted like that never happened), and I thought the final "twist" ending was overdone (it seemed to me the ending should have been left in The Everglades).

reply

I think he was just wearing really baggy clothes in the trailer park scene, plus marbles or something in his mouth to make his face a little fuller. But I don't think they acted like that never happened - it was a big plot point that Delour pulled one over on Malcolm on "April 1."

I didn't know the twist was coming when I first saw it, and I felt cheated at the ending in the Everglades. I was glad for the twist (but I'd have shot him a helluva lot faster).

reply

I wouldn't consider it "great" or "classic" but it's a pretty entertaining one, and Russell is very good in the lead.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

reply

There's a buttload of thrillers from the 80's people dont remember any more. If they didnt have good box office results, they werent pushed into home video, and couldn't be seen over & over again for people to remember. Actually, there's a ton of comedies from the 80's with the same problem.

In the future its gonna be even worse cuz there are many more mediocre movies made in the 2000's and ALL of them went to video whether they had good box office returns or not. Actually my biggest fear is that years from now people only remember the crappy movies that had loads of hype & advertising, like GI Joe and the Transformers.

reply

It's not a great thriller by any means but it's certainly not one of the worst. Richard Jordan is very good as the killer. And the scene with the baby gets me every time.

reply

Not forgotten by me! I watched it last night. It's a pretty good thriller.

Definitely shows its age, and some weaknesses prone to the era. But the story is good and the cast demonstrates the potential - how about a remake? Who would you cast, how would you change it? Maybe a season long episodic TV run?
