A guilty pleasure....

I thought the film had gotten unfavorable notices when it first came out, I always sit and watch this film on the too rare occasions that it's shown on t.v. I guess I considered it as a guilty pleasure since it didn't seem to be highly favored. I see here that it did get some nominations. I'm glad. I like films dealing with early twentieth century film and stage, even in fantasy like Maxie.
I have to say the scene that stayed with me was the scene where Ruth Gordon and Maxie dance and she, Trudy (Ruth Gordon), realizes who it is. Short but very moving scene, acting and music cue.

I saw this for the first time last week. My sister finally tracked down an affordable one! It was a complete delight! I can't understand the appalling reviews it got at the time. Who are these people? Are their sensibilities so warped by all the trash that they see that they don't recognize a good story when they see one?

The scene that I think of first is Glenn Close (and Maxie) singing "Bye Bye, Blackbird."

The whole film is a delight.
