Tell me this is not the most ridiculous movie youve seen.

I think this movie is a blast! Every once in a while it will show up on The Fox Movie channel late nights. If I see it on, I always flip to it. It's a very under rated movie!

The scene in the bathroom brings tears to my eyes every time!

It's pretty good. You should listen to the commentary as it is very interesting.

The guy in the fiat looking for the puddle after the ambulance pulls away is worth watching the whole movie far, though the rest of the movie is good too.
That is just my fave
Also, maddy saying that this man has been badly beaned.

Be yourself, everyone else is taken

reply

I love that scene with the guy in the fiat and the look he gives the Ambulance when the flushing sounds were played very loudly. I laugh so hard every time I see that!! :))

Sorry to disappoint you guys but this movie is barely funny. The original French movie "Le Grand Blond avec une Chaussure Noir" is SO much funnier. After having watched more than 12000 movies in the last 30 years form all over the world I still don't understand why America has to do remake and spoil good foreign movies/scripts. Even though I love James Belushi, sadly he doesn't save the day...
(but everyone is entitled to their opinion, right...)

reply

It may be funnier if you speak French. This is not a cut against foreign films, but you know what they say about things getting lost in translation.

Until I speak and understand French fluently, I'll stick with the Red Shoe.

reply

Oh, that's OK; I'm not disappointed. In order to be disappointed I would have to believe that your opinion carries more weight than my own. Since I don't believe that, nor do I share your opinion, I am not disappointed. So no need to be sorry.

Hear, hear, therealcorsican!

reply

Wow, GreenIsTheSea, you are quite delusional about your importance and your expertise. Nobody cares. Try just enjoying a flick and forget about every movie having to be a work of art.

reply

I didn't give the film a great rating but it is a guilty pleasure. I love old school clumsy out of place Hanks in movies like this. That is the whole apeal. He is a John Ritter type comedian. I loved John Ritter also.

I caught abit of this film on tv today.Wish i had seen the whole thing.I'll have to get it on dvd.It was my first time seeing it.The scenes that i thought were hysterical were when Tom Hanks was playing with the orchestra on stage, and he kept looking at Lori Singer and he was playing the wrong tune because he was distracted, and the scene where Lori got her hair stuck in Tom's zip on his pants after he pulled his zip back up,and he drags her across the room and it looked like something else, lol !.

12000 movies in 30 years?
That is 400 movies a year
or one or two every day...
Do you have a job?
I barely have time to watch 1 or 2 movies a week let alone every day.
Interesting statement...

Oh, come on. That's one a day, with an extra one roughly 1 out of every 3 weekend days (Saturdays & Sundays). So that's 1 1/2 to 2 hours per day (generally) with an extra couple hours less than once per weekend.

Do you really not know anybody who watches that much TV? There are plenty of them out there. (Heck, there are people who watch that much sports on TV, though the hours tend to be more weighted toward weekend watching in that case.) Seeing that many movies just means that someone ignores TV series and sports, and just watches movies.

What a goofy thing to say. After a series of commenters say they like a movie, someone says they are sorry to dissappoint but the movie wasn't good. So everyone who liked it, please go hide your heads in shame for being so undiscerning as to like something greenisthesea didnt like.

my god its full of stars

reply

Your opinion doesn't "disappoint" us, don't worry. The movie is a mildly funny, well-shot distraction, no more, no less. The original French version is not as funny as some would have you believe, although we all appreciate the massive, self-serving resume. lol

How does this spoil the movie you like? I mean, your movie still exists, doesn't it. This movie didn't somehow erase the magnetism from the tape or the codes from the dvd, did it? IF you prefer it, watch it. Nothing need be spoiled for me to enjoy the version I like.

Never thought I'd see a snooty reviewer dropping movie counts and extolling foreign originals shouting out Jim Belushi as one of his loves. That said, this is one of the only movies I think Jim Belushi is really good in.

I get why that would be a bit surprising. However, it makes perfect sense in this case for two reasons:

1) This role and James Belushi seem absolutely tailor-made for each other. The role is set up perfectly for his strengths as a comic performer and never comes close to asking him to do anything that would expose his limitations as an actor.

2) Having seen both versions, that's the only role that is just clearly done better in the American version. That's partly because of the perfect fit for Belushi mentioned above and partly because I think that the casting of Maurice (the Morris equivalent; all the names are changed) was clearly the weakest link in the French cast. While I think that it's pretty clear that Hanks is an overall better actor than Richard (greater range of things that he can play, etc.), I found Richard to be funnier in this role / film (since humor is so subjective / personal, I don't expect that opinion to be universal). With all due respect to fans of Lori Singer, in this role I'll take Mirielle Darc every time. The others were more toss-ups (yes, Dabney Coleman is great, but Blier was also an excellent actor), although I would note that the film directors asked different things from the other career spy roles in the two movies. In the French version they were all much more consistently stoic and poker-faced (and for me the contrast between that and slapstick craziness surrounding the violinist made the physical comedy come across as funnier, and also makes it funnier when the frustration does spill out of the characters chasing the violinist; that directing choice about how all of those supporting roles will be played is one of the primary reasons why I prefer the French version).

I just love this movie and still after 25 plus years can't understand why it wasn't better received by both critics and audiences. Good performances by all of the cast( you sense they had a lot of fun), good cimematography and a fantastic soundtrack all add up to a very worthy film as far as I'm concerned. If you get the opportunity...don't miss it!

reply

it's not. here are a few films more ridiculous that i've seen in the past few years.

1. "kidnapped" starring taylor lautner, which includes exactly 0 kidnappings, kidnappers, or anything even remotely resembling kidnapping.

2. "gone" with Amanda Seyfreid. While it is an excellent movie in many respects, it is also the film that paranoid schizophrenics will probably have on continuous play as they flush their meds down the toilet. the films complete lack of self awareness just kind of rubs me funny.

3. battleship. didnt even see it. read the CineFX article about it, just couldnt bring myself to sit through it

4. the man who knew to little. bill murray is so ridiculously 'out of it' that he somehow becomes a spy? its kind of like 'being there' if they cut out the drama and political commentary. oh. then there's "what about bob"

5. Weekend at Bernie's. I defy anyone to 'reboot' this franchise.

6. and and on and on.

while i may not like Man with Red Shoe all that much if i rewatched it, i have fond memories from childhood seeing it on HBO. why?

a. bicycles

b. baseball

c. lori singer

d. jim belushi and carrie fisher dressed up like an ape and a jungle queen

e. government agents being silly

f. dabney coleman being dabney coleman

g. music. really good music.

h. people practicing music

i. tom hanks.

Fliphop you made me laugh by listing those 9 "fond memories" of the movie. It really is a funny film.

I think you're right enzo. It's been a while since I last saw it, but I can't remember Jim being dressed as Tarzan, but I do remember CF in the leopard bikini.

Love this movie. Didn't give it a 10, but it is a solid 8. Have seen it dozens of times. ALL-STAR cast, interesting direction... silly, overblown situations and lines that lead to really brilliant filmmaking... "Richard Drew is a complex man, filled to the breaking point with psychological conflicts. His violin is a substitute for severe anger and repression... 'sexual' repression." "Yeah... you can see it in the eyes." Cut to Lori Singer. EXCELLENT!!

Tom Hanks, Jim Belushi, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Carrie Fisher, Lori Singer, David Ogden Stiers, Irving Metzman... I mean, how do you beat that cast. And the score WAS brilliant... though Thomas Newman then essentially plagiarized himself over the next dozen or so films he did.

I corresponded with Lori Singer a couple times. She's largely given up acting. She a cellist, model, dancer, too... multi-talented and looks AND a pleasant personality. I was honored she took the time to respond to my inquiries about her career.

I don't know how a thinking person cannot love this film.

reply

I like this movie very much. I find it even more funny than Airplane.

reply

I agree, great movie...great cast, interesting plot and lots of funny scenes.

Does the theme remind you of part of Dana's Theme from Ghostbusters?
That's the first thing that came to mind.
I was pleasantly surprised by the film. The online ratings made me think it would be mediocre.
The bike stunt is great where the man flips over the table, the bike comes apart and he lands in the water.
The set of the hotel scene where they are in the room behind 2 way mirrors.
The exploding cigars starting a shoot out.
There are a lot of subtle and layered jokes in this movie.
