The Man who came from the sky

I haven't seen this since it came out, but I remember Bruce Spence's role being reactivated but didn't they also alter the previous movie's ending by having him living alone and not leading the Great Northern Tribe? It's never explained

reply

I remember Bruce Spence had a little girl, his daughter I guess, living with him in Thunderdome.

reply

Yes, but in Mad Max 2, we see Spence's character leading the establishment of the Great Northern Tribe

I read somewhere they were meant to be different characters? Not sure how or where I read it.

reply

Really? Because in MMBTD Max clearly looks at Spence and reacts with a look of familiarity and tells him that he knows that he knows how to fly and has a plane. It's a rushed scene and they don't dwell on it but it always annoyed me that they did that, among other things. Overall I didn't like that they made this sequel and should have left Max in the elevated legendary status he attained in Mad Max 2

This scene has some debate among fans. Bruce Spence said that someone else was in the role but something happened and he was asked to fill the role late in production. So it sounds like it was intended that Max and the pilot had never met.

However, Max stops, stares and points while saying, "YOU!" and knows he has a plane. It is very clear Max is familiar with the pilot and knows he can intimate him to get them on the plane and out of there, given their history.

In Mad Max 2 the pilot has a bit of a thing for one of the young women in the compound, so it's possible the little girl is their child. I doubt this is all linked, given the late replacement of the character by Spence, but it all sure seems to fit in right.

They were different characters. I remember that being explained at the time.

I think the look of recognition by Max was meant as an inside joke. Unfortunately, it served to confuse some viewers who assumed it was the same character.

I don't know about the little girl story line. In MM2 it is pointed out by the feral kid that the man from the sky (Spence) became their leader when they started the Great Northern Tribe that he would eventually lead himself as he got older. As others pointed out, Spence was suppose to be a different character but it didn't play out as an inside joke

reply

Yes he is a different character.
Max recognises him because he stole his camels and cart at the beginning of the movie. Others pointed out that he has a daughter, he actually has a son called Jebediah jr and is played by Adam Cockburn.

reply

I'll need to watch the film again because I remember seeing Spence in the beginning of the fim.

reply

yes , thats when he stole the vehicle , as wearsalan said .

reply

Yup. This is the correct answer.

reply

Did he have a chainsaw arm?

reply

one could twist the story a little if they wanted to see max and gyro captain reunited by saying the gyro captain had a child with the blonde from mad max 2, remained leader until the feral kid was old enough to take over and when the blonde unfortunately died he took off with his son back to the wasteland. but there are many actors in this series as well as other series that have actors return for different roles in the sequels. die hard and lethal weapon films are such examples.
