The ending... did the bell ring?

Wife and I just watched it on Amazon.

The ending has us totally baffled. The dead guy is holding a string tied to a bell. They are all watching the bell at the wake.

Then the camera cuts away to a scenic shot and we hear a bell being violent rung.

Are they saying that he came back? Or was that just the local church?

I don't get it.
