Would You Have Gone?

There is nothing like love's young dream I guess but practicalities aside would you have summoned the courage to do what Elaine did & do you think she made the right decision?
I suppose she was young with relatively few ties, no job & she didn't seem particularly close to her family either & so if the very worst thing happened & her new life with Peter didn't work out as expected (assuming that she hadn't renounced her British citizenship that is) then she could always have returned to Kirby to start afresh.
So yes I personally do think that she did the right thing in the circumstances. After all you only have one life & you have to seize all opportunities that come your way too.
As for myself? Well contradictory to the above I don't think I would personally have had the guts to do what Elaine did......... :o(

What about people going to America in 18th or 19th century? It was almost sure that they'd never have a chance to see their families again. Not to mention those who were going to Australia (but most didn't do it by their own free will). Most of these people were so poor that they'd try their luck anywhere, and they knew that most of them will stay poor anyway, but it is like playing lottery, only here you bet with the rest of your life. Today, with possibilities to reach any place on Earth within a day or two, even adventure like Elaine's don't look so risky or disturbing. Yes, it is true that in early 80's nobody could have known that it was the last decade for USSR, but going to America also included war with natives, or French, or Mexicans... yet people, as we can see, didn't hesitate.
