In the Making Of Tom Cruise isnt even mentioned

Odd, no?

I never expected him to be in the Documentary, but not even mentioned?

He probably stated he didn't want to be mentioned, er something. Leave it to him to sweep us real fans back on our feet when it comes to this BEAUTIFUL film. Such a shame too. He's a real jerk for not at the very least, commending it for it's final place in cinema history (the directors cut). He should. Might teach him a little something about R-E-S-P-E-C-T. He owes at least that to Ridley and the rest of the filmmakers, if no one else.

His loss. The film was great either way, and he didn't deserve to be part. Oh well.

I like Tom, but sometimes I don't get him. He's lucky he
got the part of Jack and I think Johnny Depp should've
got the role instead because he was considered and
would've did better.

reply

Just watched the making of again today and thought the exact same thing. They talk about casting but never even mentioned how they came to cast Tom. Surely even without his involvement you couldnt just ignore he was in the film.

reply

[deleted]

He's never liked the film and regrets his involvement in it. He never talks about it and I think just wants it to remain forgotten in his career as far as he's concerned.

A shame if that's true, it's quite a piece of work from a technical stand point, a solid fairy tale.

I've got an ignore list longer than a Chinese phone book.

reply

[deleted]

If I were him, I'd deny involvement in that role, too. He was cheesy, and the movie was weak. The ONLY great thing in the movie was Tim Curry.

Tom Cruise is apparently an asshat about this film. He's embarrassed about it or some such. Granted, it wasn't the most 'manly' of roles (whatever that really means) but it wasn't supposed to be. Its a fairy tale, basically.

Tom is quite the snob it seems. I don't know why, he's not the best actor. When he yells angrily you want to laugh, his voice is SO feminine and high!

If he wants to be embarrassed by a bad movie, he should shy away from mention of "Color of Money". What a horrid bore that film is.
I would say "Cocktail" too, except that film is a guilty pleasure of mine LOL!

reply

He's not an ass hat about it. He prefers the DC version not the theatrical and tells people to watch the DC version.

It's funny how much it bothers people that he didn't want to do any more work for this film after the fact.

Like the guy isn't super busy or anything, right.

reply

I love this movie and I like TC but he really is an ass here because he doesn't want anything to do with it now.

reply

It wouldn't be the first time that an actor is embarrassed by an early film.

Just look at Leonardo DiCaprio (Critters 3) and Jennifer Aniston (Leprechaun) for two famous examples.

Also, Cruise and Scott are on good terms anyway.

To be fair though, Critters 3 & Leprechaun are both crappy films AND flops at the box office.
Legend has a fairly large cult following too.

He nor any other actor is obligated to like their earlier, less acclaimed work.

It's not like he's going around ragging on the film. He just doesn't talk about it at all.

But it's clear he's ordered the powers that be not to bring him up in any way, shape or form of this film. He's missing from the behind the scenes and he isn't even mentioned. Yes, actors are allowed to not like all of their work but you can't erase it from existence. Even Jennifer Lopez talks about Gigli and that did WAYYYYYY more damage to her than this film did to Tom. He's the freaking lead so its weird to watch things on the film and he is vacant from all mention of it

"Thank you life, thank you love. And it is true there is some angels in this city"

reply

Cruise can't erase such thing out of existence. He doesn't have the legal power to do so.

He does have the influence though and why not use it when you can use it to help forget some of your lousy, early work?

"Even if he had the legal power people still have seen it so erasing it from their minds is something he can't ever accomplish."

People love the film. How about appreciating that? How about standing by what you've done? It was only when it flopped that he had such horrible feelings towards it. I can't stand when actora do that. Nobody put a gun to your head and forced you to film the movie. Be the bigger person and stand by it

reply

No one has to stand by anything. It was a job and he had a difficult experience with it.

It'd be one thing if her ever denied be in this movie or he's actively calling people who like it idiots, it is another to simply ignore it and not want to talk about it.

Mega stars had to start some where ? And they're usually horror movies . Tom Cruise can get off his high horse, and be proud of Lagend .

hell, it's probably best he was not mentioned as this is BY FAR his worst film that he starred in, or even had a small role in for that matter.

Tom Cruise has the most impressive filmography out of anyone out there as when he stars in a film it's the closest you can get to a guaranteed good film but this film was pretty damn boring as i had to force myself to make it 30minutes into it before i could not take it any longer and stopped watching. but even 10-15minutes into it you can tell it's going out the window pretty quickly.

i can't believe Tom Cruise/Ridley Scott where tied to this as it's easily the worst film both of them had been affiliated with.

i give this film a 3/10 MAX as it commits the worst crime a film can commit which is... it's damn boring.

p.s. prior to seeing this film 'All The Right Moves' (6/10) was Tom Cruise worst film that he starred in but 'Legend' just took that title and not only that, it's his worst film period i had seen and i have seen all of his films lacking Taps/Losin' It/Endless Love.

If he wants to be embarrassed by a bad movie, he should shy away from mention of "Color of Money". What a horrid bore that film is.

seriously!?

that film is FAR better than Legend as The Color of Money in my Top 3 1980's Cruise films, probably the #1 spot to for his 1980's films.

-The Color of Money (1986) = 8/10 (probably my 2nd favorite Paul Newman film behind The Hustler (1961)(9/10), which The Color of Money is a sequel to The Hustler)
-Legend (1985) = 3/10 MAX (it's damn boring as, like i was saying above, i could not even finish it and killed the film 30minutes into it as i could not take it any longer)

I agree. I fail to understand why this movie has any fans, and I like fantasy movies for the most part. For me, the only good thing was Tim Curry. I didn't care for the vaseline-coated lens making the film blurry-looking. I didn't care for the exterior scenes looking like exacty what they are, scenes filmed inside a studio (or garage! Just too dark). I didn't care for any of the makeup/costumes except for Tim Curry. And it is boring. I tried giving it another watch this past weekend to see if I had matured enough to understand it's appeal to fans, and still didn't like it.

"The Color of Money" is a great movie. Cruise was great as the over-amped young gun to Newman's weary hustler. Perfect role for his energy back then.

reply

That's sad for you two. You've conformed to the typical movies of today where they don't allow for great fantasy ones like Legend. Sad sad sad.

reply

I'm happy for you that you get so much enjoyment out of this movie. However, there is no need to get personal in this discussion. So save your condescending "sympathy" for someone that really needs it. The only thing I've conformed to is quality movies. No one is "not allowing" anything so even your attempt to wax poetic is putrid. Save your sadness for Jerry's Kids, troll.

reply

Well this movie is not big budget or well known. In short it is pretty underrated so to rip on it is pretty low. It's not the same as ripping on Transformers or something.

tom you cheesy guy i like the film and its one of the few movies tom cruise is in that i dont notice its him so IMO its one of his better efforts

you will have to forgive the lack of full stops lack of proper spelling im dyslexic but not stupid

If you ever watch the Bryan Ferry video for "Is Your Love Strong Enough", which features clips from Legend, you'll notice TC is not in it either.

reply

he actually mentionned it in a few interviews I saw of him and talked about the great director's cut version.
You're wrong, sorry.

reply

I get that he may feel it's cheesy and is embarrassed to have been in it, but it was one of his first starring roles. You gotta start somewhere, and I'd say this movie wasn't a bad first role when you consider some of the first starring role's for a lot of other major stars. This film is total 80's cheesiness, but Tim Curry makes it. The make-up job, his presence and acting shines through the make-up and prosthetic's. I haven't seen this film in years, and it's not a movie I admit to liking unless I know someone else that enjoys it, I guess I feel too old for it now at 28. But when I saw this movie as a kid, I loved it, and watched it so much I about wore out the VHS tape. Still, for Tim Curry alone, I like this film. And the nostalgic memories it brings back to me of my childhood alone is worth watching it.

The dreams of youth are the regrets of maturity

I think I read somewhere once from prior to the movie being released, Tom was happy about the film. When it didn't do well, he was heartbroken. The critics didn't help that either and when bad reviews started pouring out, he just stopped associating with it etc. I know I've read/known that over the years, but cannot recall the source(s). If anyone else recalls this, perhaps someone else knows sources/links somewhere.

His old man died whilst making the film, Cruise had a dodgy relationship with his dad so the movie must bring back all sorts of bad memories about it.

reply

midnightsscar is correct - I saw this way back when it first came out & remember interviews where Tom Cruise said he loved working on the film & also remember how devastated he was when it didn't do well at the box office. I didn't think he was that great in the film & thought he was miscast as Jack but still enjoyed the movie. It's a beautiful movie & didn't get the credit it deserved. I need to get the 2 disc set so I can compare the 2 versions & decide which one I like better.

reply

Cruise looks like a simpleton in this film. He's probably embarrassed by it now.

Lol, yup. As an avid Pink Floyd and David Gilmour fan though and a person who owns a Black Fender strat to mimic Gilmour's guitar playing as much as possible, I always get distracted by Gilmour's guitar work to pay much attention to Ferry's behavior in the video, lol, and I actually enjoy Bryan Ferry's music.

Well...this is both true and false in my opinion...if I had never watched this movie as a kid, I would never have liked it today...its a horrible mess if you see it the first time today so I understand why you give it a 3 in rating...I give it a 6 todays only cause of the cult value and when I saw this as a kid, it was most definitely a 10 and only because of that, this movie now holds a cult value for me.

thats a plus!!! I must stop avoiding the disc

reply

As others have said, Tom Cruise is embarrassed by this film and does not like to talk about it. I remember hearing about an interview he did a while back where an interviewer started bringing the film up and Tom told him not to pursue that line of questioning. That he wouldn't talk about "Legend" and that if the interviewer kept going with that he (Tom) would simply end the interview.

Shame that he still attaches such dislike for the movie, especially as it has gained in cult status.

I do think that he either asked to be left out of things for Legend or they leave him out because they know he won't talk about it.

Neville, did you say a pig was climbing up the outside of the house?

reply

Sorry, but I think that is such a stupid stance to take about a previous body of work he's not happy about. Of course, he has every right to decline taking part in Making-of-Docs or talking about it in interviews, but to block his name from even being mentioned in special features or documentaries about the film is just juvenile.
