Why didn't Molina ditch his Red Scarf?

Once Molina was sure he was being followed by the government (the very men he worked with in prison), why didn't he abort the meeting? While he was running away from his pursuers I kept thinking "Get rid of the scarf!"

If he had, Valentin's friends would not have found him, and thus not walk right into trap that was set. Also, if he no longer was headed for the "meeting spot," he could have taken off in a direction more conducive to a successful escape.

I haven't read the book yet, and so I'm wondering if this only happened in the movie version.

I didn't understand the ending at all and dropped it until now. It almost seemed as though it was tacked on to appease the censors or something like that. I saw this movie in the theater years ago so the details are fuzzy.

You may as well go to perdition in ermine; you're sure to come back in rags. Katharine Hepburn

I was confused by the ending. Did he plan on dying? Why else would he close his account?
