Is it as racist as it looks?

..in the trailer? I laughed this one off on the poster alone back in '85. Like most others, "Raiders" was the 1st thing that came to mind. (the timing for this was undeniably opportunistic) Never actually watched it though.

Yes and no. Depends on how serious you think it is.

In my opinion the movie is a parody of the genre of "White savior" movies in a similar Fashion as "Big Trouble in little China". It plays the tropes straight (So the Africans are barbaric and worship the white girl and the Germans are crazy militaristic and evil) but in such an over the top way that it is impossible not to laugh at it.

It basically boils down to the question: Do you think "hogan's heroes" is racist against Germans because of the way it portrays Colonel Klink?

I think the character is definitely a stereotype that I suspect most Germans would either laugh at or be embarrassed by.
But we're talking about *this* film. I ought to dig around & see if I can find out what the director had in mind for it; satire or just lazy writing.

This movie is definitely not "lazy writing". The dialogue is quite snappy and clever, actually.

The the problem is, people often see what they want to see in things. This movie is not "racist", unless you go into looking for "racism" to complain about. Which is often the case these days.

A tv sitcom made by American caucasians racist against German caucasians? How is that racist?
