Several weeks pass between when she wrote the article and when Rick comes to see her. They could have dated for a little bit but realized that Rick wanted Terry. Deborah was cool, she probably understood.
I partially thought that they weren't really that crazy about each other. She wanted to make Greg jealous and Rick wanted to irritate Greg.
The way I see it, you know how high school crushes are. One minute you're hot for someone and the next you're all interested in someone else :) Besides at the end, when Terry says she thought Rick hated her, he admitted that he had missed her. After all they had actually become pretty close friends. I think he truly did miss their friendship and then he went to see her and figures, 'Hey, she's my good friend and she happens to be a really good looking girl who actually wants me.' I guess he understood that if he wanted a serious girlfriend it wasn't going to get any better than Terry.
