The Legal Troubles of Natty Gann

As happy as the ending is, isn't she still facing charges as a fugitive in two states (though not the state she's in now)? Of course she's only a juvenile, so maybe they wouldn't bother to haul her back to Chicago and then Wyoming or wherever the ranch was. But still, if she's afraid to even board a train, I would think that would put a damper on her new life in Washington State. And you would think authorities in one of those places would make some effort to contact her dad.

When she tried to tell the local authorities she wasn't an orphan they refused to listen. In the depression they were not going to spend money hunting for a juvenile outside their jurisdiction on such minor charges.

Also in those days the local authorties had little money to follow up on anything except maybe bank robbers like John Dillenger.

She is now with her father and no one is going to pay attention to a kid with a parent. Its not as if they had computer databases back then.

My uncle taught school during that period and many counties were bankrupt. He and others were paid in local script (IOU's), You could try and see if local merchants would accept it or sell it at a big discount. The counties had to wait until tax collections came in to redeem that script. So, no they weren't going to chase after her.
