Was 'Wolf' a wolf?

I just rewatched the movie after I dont know how many years and still love it. (This isn't always the case. I went from horrified to rolling on the floor laughing when I rewatched "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"!)
Anyways, I introduced my kids to it, and they liked it as well, from 7 years old all the way up to 13, but my son had an interesting question:

He wanted to know if the wolf was a real wolf or actually part husky or something like that? Anyone know?

Wolf was played by Jed, who was definetly not a full wolf. I don't know what his lineage was, but I can tell you that. Jed was in several other Disney movies playing wolves and half-wolves, including "White Fang". If I see anything more I will let you know.

i read on citzenlunchbox.com's famous wild dogs section that he was also in 'the thing' in 1982.

If you want to see a genuine wolf, watch the TV series "Pistols 'n' Petticoats" with Ann Sheridan (it's available on DVD and might be on Youtube as well). Supposedly their wolf really was one.

Jed was an Alaskan Malamute/Wolf cross. So part dog part wolf. Owned and trained by Clint Rowe who also trained Beasley(Hooch) for the movie Turner and Hooch.

BTW, I first saw this movie when I was prob 8 yrs. old. Now Im 20 and it is still one of my favorites.

Jed had a long life and even outlived the average age of a gray wolf kept in captivity (i.e. 16 years) by two years

reply

Eighteen years? Wow! What a dog!

I remember seeing this movie in ninth grade. I absolutely loved it. I rented it out and watched it at home. Jed/Wolf was my favorite character in it because I'm a dog nut.

That said, Disney needs to get their act together and give this movie a proper release with widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1.

Jed was a Wolf/Dog. A gorgeous looking Wolf/Dog.

I love him too... so much infact that I named my first dog (a Siberian Husky) Wolf after the character.

we watched the movie in English Class (because we're going to read of mice and men and she wanted us to know what the great depression was like) and she said that wolf was a part dog part wolf, which confirms what the others have said :-)

Dog fight scene could have shorter too. "Horrible!"

Jed was a wolf-malamute mix. He was a GREAT dog. Met him more than once.Funny how a movie i saw when I was 10 is still a favorite.

I was watching 24 tonight and saw character that played Mr. Gann...so I had to come look at the boards.

what type of dog was the puppy in the beginning?

reply

The puppy looked more like a scotch terrier, but not the black kind. there is a beige kind out there as well.
