Martial arts movies

Hey everyone.
Im doing research for my media corse into the history of martial arts films.
If some of you could tell me your favourite martial arts mvies, your favourtie stars, directors and if sub-titles are an issue for you could you please post your response. Also do you think the breakthrough of these movies into the west has made them more popular and benefited the martial arts movie industry.

Thanks to everyone who responds to this becasue it will be a great help to my course.

hay charcotla....

i started watching these movies years ago, probably watching Jackie Chan as one of my 1st and i was hooked, i liked alot of the Van Damme's films but my favourite to date is Jet Li, he is an amazing fighter and not a bad actor, my favourite martial arts film i probably couldnt say but if it had too chose it would be "Warrior King" and i like Jackie Chans "Mr. Nice Guy"

another actor im beginning to like and looks like a very good upcomming star, is Tony Jaa, he is full on and if you get a chance to see Warrior King, that is one kick a$$ film, his style is just great and demolishes people with one....knee....to the head

subtitles are not really a problem for me, i can watch them but it does my nut reading them and trying to watch the fight/action scenes at the same time lol but its ok

and i think stuff like Jet Li's "Fong Sai-Yuk" and "Fearless" films from accross the water are a different kind of film and it just gets us westerners hooked on it.

then he has ones like "kiss of a dragon" "Unleashed" and "The One" which are absolutly top notch.

hope it helps....

STEWIE: Never call them that again! It's Lois and the Fatman! Do you hear me?

Started with crappy Jean claude, that at one time was (I thought) was good.
Then got into Steven Segal and Bruce Lee.
Nowadays I prefer, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. I enjoy Jackie and how he does his own stunts, and his "real" feel to his movies, compaired to Jet lee and his "stings" and CGI though.

Favorites include:

Bloodsport- Based on a true story of Frank Duks, with Jean claude
Under seige part 1 - Steven Segal at his best.
Fearless - Great Jet Li movie
Hero - Wild Jet Li movie
Fists of Fury - My all time favorite Bruce lee flick
Big Trouble in little China - When I was a kid this was my favorite.
First Strike - Famous Jackie Chan "ladder fight" a MUST see for martial arts fans!

Favorite chorographer would most likely be Jackie Chan, but, I don't have a vast knowledge on chorographers in general.

Favoriye director in these type movies I have no idea, but I would say the Ronny Yu the director from Fearless or Wei Lo from my favorite Bruce lee film Fists of Fury.

Subtitles are never an issue for myself. I actually prefer subtitles with the original language instead of a voice over language dub. (They normally use worse voices on a language voice over dub, sometimes changing the entire perspective of certain characters, and ruining the entire movie.)

P.S. Thanks for the list meggert will look into "ong bak tony jaa" and
"kung fu hustle" always like getting new kung fu flicks.(the other ones I have seen)

Fav movies:

Drunken Master II - Jackie Chan
Ong Bak - Tony Jaa
Hero - 'Everyone'
Iron Monkey - Donnie Yen
SPL - not sure if this counts as Martial Arts but check out Yen v. Wu fight
Once Upon Time In China I + II - Jet Li, Yuen Biao, Donnie Yen

Also see Bride With White Hair - not a fav. but interesting, dark take on wuxia/MA genre and directed by Ronnie Yu of Fearless fame, that you liked.

Theres a whole host more that I haven't seen with all these guys, especially not seen many Li or Yen as can't find many versions ro rent that aren't horribly mutilated or d***ed.

Fav stars:

Jet Li
Donnie Yen
Tony Jaa
Jackie Chan
Michelle Yeoh - find some of her early stuff like 'In Line of Duty' series
Zhang Zi-Yi - don't think she really counts as MA star but is lovely....

Fav Directors:

Tsui Hark
Corey Yuen
Yuen Woo-Ping
Jackie Chan

Subtitles? Of course - see above for my opinion about dubbed movies.

This is by no means comprehensive as I've only recently rediscovered my love for HK cinema plus haven't covered earlier, (70's) stuff or Japanese/Korea movies. Check out www.lovehkcinema.com - their reviews section has a few lists of recommendations which is a good place to start.

Hope that helps,

Be sure to check-out Sammo Hung and The Lau Brothers(Lau Kar Leung, Lau Kar Wing, Lau Kar Yung and Gordon Liu). Also look for anything with the late, great Lam Ching-Ying.

Who says violence is not the answer?
