Can you help me out... More movies like this?

When I was a kid I loved these crazy fantasy/martial arts movies but I can't really remember many titles. The names I remember are Chinese Ghost Story, Zu Warriors, Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind, Mr Vampire and Miracle Fighters.

Can anyone tell me of any other fantasy or horror tinged HK Martial Arts movies similar to these? Any ideas would be hugely appreciated.

Apologies if this post is repetetive or if you see it on a message board elsewhere. Thanks very much for any help!

If you enjoyed A Chinese Ghost Story, you'll also like The Golden Swallow (1987 or 1988). It has a very similar plot only it involves a bird spirit who falls for a scholar. I actually liked this film more than CGS though I can't remember exactly why now. I think it's because it devoted more time to the relationship between the couple, which allowed the viewer to better bond with them.

Go to the website lovehkfilm.com and you can get an alphabetical listing of a number of HK fantasy/horror/sorcery titles. There is also a directory of HK actors/producers/directors and their filmographies. Hope this helps.

another website that you can try is kungfucinema.com

Without a doubt look for 'Magic Cop' also starring Lam Ching Ying, one of my absolute faves.

Nocturnal Demon would be a good choice.

This movie reminded me of the Evil Dead films personally... A little slapstick and silly humor with cool and funny special effects, a dark undertone and good action (although kung-fu is a little different from chainsaws and boomsticks). In particular Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness are closer to this film, as the original Evil Dead had less of a comedy aspect to it.

Crazy Safari is indeed one hell of a weird film; I rank it as one of the best of the genre, though there's very little action and nothing much happens. However it's a very difficult film to get hold of legitimately: I've only ever seen the laserdisk for sale. As far as spin offs go I second Magic Cop and recommend Ronny Yu's The Trail, and also Lam Ching Ying's directorial debut Vampire vs Vampire (+ all the Mr Vampire sequels), I also hear Ultimate Vampire is good too, but that's a similar situation as Crazy Safari, good look in finding those two.
I watched Mad Mad Ghost recently, not a classic by any means, but it had a healthy amount of Lam Ching Ying in it and the manner in which he sorted out a ghost in his sleep was beautiful. The man's ghost busting skills never cease to amaze. It's a genuinely funny film if you can appreciate the incredibly broad slapstick humour, it's certainly a required taste but I like it. It's only available on vcd as far as I know, so hunt it down before it gets deleted.

Here are some that I've enjoyed:

VAMPIRE VS. VAMPIRE (AKA. THE ONE-EYEBROW PRIEST)
MR. VAMPIRE PARTS 1,2,3,4
THE EXORCIST MASTER
MAGIC COP
A CHINESE GHOST STORY 1,2,3
SPOOKY, SPOOKY, SPOOKY
KUNG FU ZOMBIE
THE LEGEND OF THE 7 GOLDEN VAMPIRES (Peter Cushing and David Chiang - Hammer/Shaw Brothers)
BANANA SPIRIT
HOCUS POCUS
THE DEAD AND THE DEADLY
ULTIMATE VAMPIRE

Gah, Hocus Pocus was terrible.

Vampire Vs Vampire was a good idea, but flawed.

Mr Vampire pt 3 is the closest to part 1 IMO, two was too campy.

Magic Cop is an awesome movie though.

I have a number of these kung fu\horror subgenre films.
If you liked Mr. Vampire 1985, then definitely check out Mr. Vampire 1992.
Also Don't miss:
Tsui Hark's Vampire Hunters
Tsui Hark's A Chinese Ghost Story series, (Especially the animated one)
Magic Cop
Kung Fu from beyond the grave
Shaolin versus the Evil Dead
Holy Virgin versus the Evil Dead

Red and Black was surprisingly good: a somewhat obscure entry in the genre. It stars Lam again and Tony Leung Ka Fai plays his brother. If i remember correctly they both fall for the same girl, who's a communist party member and Lam's taoist magical meddling ends up getting him blacklisted and tortured, along with most of the town.
It reminded me a little of a cross between Zu Warriors and Farewell my Concubine and as you can imagine it's a little uneven with its occasianal lurches between horror and drama jarr depending upon how forgiving you are feeling towards these types of films. There has actually been some thought put into the screenplay and makes good use of its allegorical twist and should be applauded for it; with the communist uprising used as a backdrop for some real bad *beep* being unleashed from the local hills that has the power to possess people and send the town's leader power crazy.
Most importantly it successfully handles the elements of spooky shenanigans and drama (there's no slapstick here) in the latter period of Lam's career where most of these films were incapable of doing neither. It maturely and accurately handles the drama of the communist uprising (as far as a b movie can do) and is a real gem in the somewhat murky latter period of Lam's filmography. very competantly made and with some depth unlike the films that surround it. However some may be put off by the obscure mix of genres, dont be it sure beats Banana Spirit, Musical Vampire, Chinese Ghostbuster etc etc...
Now where's a dvd release of Wizard's Curse? I'd love to see Lam in this brain ripping cat3 kyonsi film.
