Hollywood Remake

I read somewhere and thought of it as an interesting remake. Where you have Bernie Mac play a voodoo witch doctor from new orleans. Haha I think this will be very interesting to see if it ever happens lol.

Dont forget they did start filming a Americanized version in the 80's (A Golden Harvest coproduction shot in HK) Featuring Yuen Wah in the Sifu role. I forget who the 2 American leads were, I know there was a man and a woman. As you can guess the diva like behaviour on their behalf and the probable questionable quality of the footage they had, resulted in production being shut down pretty swift. However the footage is out there, probably lurking somewhere in the media asia archives. All we need now is an Indiana Jones expedition to go find it.
edit - There's a lot of misinformation floating around the net about this film. Lam Ching Ying was in no way connected to this project.

It was Ken Wahl and Tanya Roberts. Wahl's "Ugly American" routine (can you imagine that he was pissed off because he went to China to make a movie and the lead actors spoke Chinese instead of English?!?) and Roberts' above mentioned "Hollywood Diva" behaviour rapidly led to them deciding "We've hardly begun...there's no need to finish" and closing down production.

I hope they had to swim home.

as a american, I can say hollywood has gone downhill since the 90s. some movies are good (sky captain the world of tomorrow for one) but the more recent crap is just that. crap

Isn't The Vineyard (featuring James Hong) the closest thing to a Hollywood kyonsi film?

reply

Actually, Big Trouble in Little China is probably the closest
thing to a Mr. Vampire or Chinese Ghost Story style american
film. Pretty fun movie as I recall.

reply

James Hong was in an actual hopping vampire film the same year called The Jitters. It's very low budget and not great, but it's damn fun to see Hong in an American made kyonsi film. Not to mention seeing him in Taoist robes. ;)

i can't see how they could make a US remake of Mr vampire, given the amount of chinese cultural references in it (unless they completely changed it). Its a comedy classic anyway's ..pity all the Mr Vampire sequels never lived up to the original and just became cash-ins(imho). But the original was great (so many great scenes) and created Lam Ching-ying's(RIP) CLASSIC Taoist priest character.
FYI: I think Mr.Vampire and Close Encounters Of A Spooky Kind (Sammo Hung) are the best movies in this genre (are there any others in the same league?).

PS:
I'm all for cross pollination in the film world, look at how Eastern and Western cinema have borrowed from each other in the past. And this led to many classic movies (too many to name but obviously Mr Vampire is one of them). But, straight mindless remakes are always just ignorant and miss the point of the movie medium ...unless 'cashing in' is your idea of movie making ;)

peace.

That looks like it might be pretty interesting, if it actually gets made!
