What a legendary movie!

I love the idea of the Chinese hopping vampires, and the dull reverberating thuds as they hop along after their prey. Beat that, Dracula!

Lam Ching-Ying is perfect as the vampire buster, and I, like many others, think the jail sequence is what stands out. For me, it's that and the acrobatic display from Chin Siu-Ho during the closing reels (look out for his backflip off a door and over a chasing vampire!)

By the way, the snake that gets its gall bladder removed after Ricky Hui's character Man Choi gets bitten was real! There were no fake animals being cut up (it was too expensive, and, besides, snake features in Chinese medicine).

This movie is an absolute classic.

Agreed. This movie has style.

Just watched it and loved it! Never knew vampires could hop around like bunnies and be scary and hilarious at the same time.

This is about as different from western vampire movies as it could be and probably has Dracula spinning in his coffin!

I remember watching this movie in the cinema when I was a kid (ca. 7 year old), it was really scary and Lam Ching-Ying became a favorite superhero of mine. Would like to see it again, now 20 years later.

I caught this movie on Channel 4 a couple of years before i came to live in Taiwan. Since that time i've probably seen the movie 50 times and i love it more and more each time. It's funny as hell and i just love the soundtrack. Check out some of the other Mr Vampire movies, while they're not as good, they all have something to offer.

The Others Aren't So Good As the First.
By the way whatever happened to Chin Siu Ho?

reply

As far as I can make out, he just never got the breakthrough part that would have turned him into a star; he always played second fiddle to existing stars like Lam Ching-Ying (Mr Vampire), Cynthia Rothrock (Blonde Fury) or Jet Li (Fist Of Legend). He got what amounts to a starring role in The Seventh Curse but I don't think it was quite the right vehicle to showcase his talents (and having stars like Chow Yun-Fat and Maggie Cheung in supporting roles in that probably drew more attention to them than to him).

It's a shame when this happens.

He still acts and was in Rigor Mortis, a movie about a washed up actor that acted in Mr Vampire. He has been leading man in movies as well as tv shows. I think there were some peeping tom scandals involving him or his brother at some point.

Yep! I own a Mega Star DVD copy of Mr. Vampire.

My brother's friend Mark doesn't even care for Hong Kong movies and he loved Mr. Vampire! We were laughing our butts off during that scene where Chin Siu Ho and Ricky Hui misuse their teacher's spells on an obnoxious guy who wants to seduce Moon Lee Choi Fung. Our eyes were glued to the TV during the climax.

I have Mr. Vampire 2 and it's almost as good. I wish the filmmakers had thought up something more original than an E.T. rip off!
