The Nubian dancers (the women)

These ladies were just too good to be a thrown-together staging. Does anyone know if they were a professional African dance troupe? And if so, by what name known?

reply

I remember hearing that they were professional dancers from Africa but am not aware of what they are called.

I asked Avner (the jewel) and he couldnt remember, but it's funny all the little things there are in that movie, secrets that only he and the cast know that he showed me one day when we watched it... and it's funny, i've known this man for years, but only recently did i find out he was in this film. crazy how things work out huh?

but anyways, even the inside info doesnt really know so... sorry haha

Actually, the Nubian dancers were, I believe, the National Folk Ballet of Senegal. A more interesting question is who is 'Americansusie'. Apparently we know each other. -Avner

Did anyone notice that they are not wearing shirts?

reply

Errr...yeah, years later when I was older! You don't really notice these things when you're a kid.

I was 9 years old when I saw it in the theatre, and I definitely noticed!

How about the differences in the ratings system from the mid eighties to now? I saw more boobs in this PG rated film than most R rated movies in the past 5 years.

I assume the censors were brought on on National Geographic magazine and so must think it's normal that black women go around topless.

reply

Somewhere I remember seeing a VHS of this movie and when Joan is in the wedding dance and going after Jack she also becomes topless, or rather her shirt opens up and the lovelies fly about. But that was a long time ago!

reply

I don't remember that at all and I know I watched this on VHS back in the day.

reply

I loved that dance scene!
