Really Stupid People Dealing with Car Problems

The kid is going to drive all the way to Colorado, over some very tall mountains.
Yet no one had the brains to replace a simple inexpensive VW fuel pump, but they did warn him about it, lol. They seemed pretty middle class and well to do, yet they couldn't even figure out that a bad fuel pump could really stymie the kid's trip

What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

It's also possible that even if the VW Camper van fuel pump had been replaced and the van was operating normally, that Eric Wilson (his real name) would've met up with those two bums anyway, and ended up dead, or badly hurt.

Eric Wilson tried to get somebody to go with him, but was unable to, so he headed out to Boulder, CO by himself.
