SPOILER ALERT. The detective figured out the whole thing. A mechanic did some after hours work and pocketed the money and just so he won't get fired delays the entire investigation and arrest of dangerous murderers. I love that plot point
shareI'll also add, however, that it was the private detective that Eric Wilson's family hired who cracked the case for them. What was really disgusting is that the FBI took full credit for having cracked the case when, in fact, for most of the time, the FBI didn't show the least bit interest in helping the Wilsons.
