with love. awesome ludlum book. Needs to be refreshed with new actors & a good director as it should translate easily to the screen from the book. we can always hope.

Couldn't agree more, fabulous book, weak film. Scott Ridley are you doing anything?

I also thought of a remake but wouldn't the characters of the story be like 60 today? I don't think it would fit today if they use the story of the Second World War, maybe if they use another war they could pull it off. Don't forget about The Chancellor Manuscript coming up next year.

One way a remake could work is a twist already suggested in the book (but it would require a bit of a deviation from the original plot).

The original terms of the covenant were that all three inheritors had to be deemed "fit" by the Swiss bankers to take control of the money. If any were found unsuitable, the money would remain frozen and the responsibility would skip to the next generation.

There's your plot solution. If the covenant had to wait until the next generation, you could easily bring the timeline of the story current and cast 30-somethings in the role as the GRANDCHILDREN, rather than the CHILDREN, of the Nazis who organized the scheme.

After 9/11 international banking regulations changed, an account like this would most definitely be flagged as suspicious, most financial institutions globally, and many non-financial institutions, are required to identify and report transactions of a suspicious nature to the financial intelligence unit in the respective country.

Even before 9/11 there were a lot international banking regulations passed to flag money laundering used to fund drug and terrorism, there is no mention of numbered accounts in the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, and in the original it's talked about quite a bit as it's eventually one of the ways they start to track down Steve McQueen's heist crew by flagging large deposits made to banks.

In the Thomas Crown Affair remake how Pierce Bronson's Thomas Crown character doesn't even bother with stealing money he steals art. These days any withdrawal, payment or transfer in the US a deposit of US$10,000 or more requires a CTR, in Europe it is EUR 15,000, and in Switzerland it is CHF 25,000. In some countries there is no CTR requirement. Suspicion of ML activity in the US requires the submission of a SAR, while in Switzerland a SAR will only get filed if that activity can be proved. As a result, thousands of SARs are filed daily in the US, while in Switzerland the rate is much lower. There are some banks in countries that don't report but they weren't around during WW II.

Why not make the money something other than cash, like a vault filled with gold or something? The vault wouldn't even necessarily need to be in a bank, it could be in the basement of some gilded attorney's office.

Gold makes more sense as a conspiracy currency, anyway, since its untraceable. A few billion dollars worth of gold would only amount to about 5 cubic meters, so while a fairly large amount it isn't implausibly large.

That is some clever thinking

All the remakes must be in present days???

Looks like it. Anyway, who would you cast as Holcroft if the movie was remade?

reply

I don't usually like remakes, but in this case I'd go for it if Micheal Mann directed it. Also, as Holcroft, I think either Robert Patrick or Gary Sinese would be great.

But knowing H'wood, it'd wind up being Will Ferrell starring and Michael Bay directing....eeesshhhh! I wanna die....

I agree that remakes are best reserved for projects that didn't live up to their potential.

This would be ideal.

Unfortunately it seems only minor classics and actual classics attract the greenlights.

I agree it could be pretty awesome!
