Question about movie

I have not been able to see this movie yet. What in it gives it an R rating in the USA? Would it be appropriate to show to high school students?

reply

I am a senior in high school and later today I have to write a paper about some themes in this movie after we watched it in class. This film is definitely appropriate to show to high school students. There is one fairly violent scene which is short but important to the movie(no gore), so I suggest you watch it beforehand and decide what to do with it.

reply

As far as I know, this movie had no rating.
There's certainly nothing in it that would meri an R rating.

I'm not sure why the R rating, but it is definitely a movie worth showing to your class. I teach high school and have used it several times. The only problem is that it is almost 2 hours long and it is such a shame to split up the viewing of the film. I would also recommend "Maria lleana eres de gracia". A much newer film, winner of Sundance Audience award and Oscar nomination for Best actress. Again it is rated R but that is because of drug theme and language (English subtitles, poor translation in my opinion). I don't know what subject you teach or your reasons for wanting to show the film. I teach Spanish and often use films to help my students with listening practice as well as cultural exposure.

I would assume that this film is rated R because of language (English subtitles) and some brief violence.

I am a college student and we just watched this film in my Latin American Studies class. I think the 'R' rating is kind of harsh for this film. It's not any worse than your average PG-13 movie today. It is a moving and special film which I recommend highly.

We just watched this film in my Spanish class and I liked it very much. Like said there was bit harsh of language in one scene, you breifly see a man being strangled before a door is shut, and there is a moment of abusive violence.

*TRUE FACT*
During the abusive scene Alicia's hand is slammed in the door, this was not supposed to happen and her hand actually broke, what you see there is not acting, she is really crying and he is really scared for her and it makes the scene so much better!

This movie has been comig many times in my mind...many times I have remind of it... it is that kind of film someone can learn about life, feelings, freedom, family...BECAUSE THIS FILM MAKES YOU THINK ABOUT...this is not for laugh, for cry, or pure entertainment...ONLY THINK about the wrong, the right, parents, children...

I am sorry. I cannot understand your ratings, or qualification...BUT WHAT I CANNOT UNDERSTAND IS WHAT DO YOU CALL VIOLENCE.

briefly you can see, as said before, any body violence... but THIS FILM IS FULL OF VIOLENCE AND CRUELTY...ENTIRE FILM IS FULL OF VIOLENCE...

is not violence when someone kidnaps your grandaughter, after killing your sister??? is not violence when you are following for years, searching any clue to find the child, and finally you find...the kidnapper say to you that you are *beep*

Is not violence when you have been kidnapped, torturated, have felt the pain, the fear , the horror ... and you have to shut your mouth, and when you tell the say that you are insane, that NEVER HAPPENED ACTUALLY WHAT YOU TELL????

It is not violence when you look after your adopted child, and after some years...you husband tells you that he had to kill the mother to get the child???

WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF VIOLENCE????

One injured wrist because lady cries, but not so violent because you cannot see direct action of one man that injures her wifes's wrist???

I am sorry but cannot understand

I see your point.

Of course it's full with violence, but I think what those ratings care for is not the violence that surrounds the story but the one shown on screen. I think they mean that one thing is to mention, imply or whatever things like torture, murder and kidnap and another is to show that. Another is like 'Z' where you see a man being tortured with a picana.
I don't really care for those ratings and I think that implied violence is worst than explicit (since 'implicit' allows your imagination to create, to imagine what happens -specially if you know what was going on- and that image in your head is much more terrible that any image that could be shown in any movie).

In my opinion it is not a violent movie, but it is about violent events.

I think there should be no age restriction to this movie, one would understand, imagine and digest according to one's age, maturity and knowledge.

I highly recommend this movie to everyone.

I wondered about that scene where he slams her hand in the door that it looked TOO realistic. I actually heard bones if I remember correctly and the angle they shot it from there is no way the door could have been made of foam or some other soft material. wow!

Here's another great article - this one about a woman finding out the truth about her parents (her "father" in particular):
