The Most Final Door Slam Since Ibsen's "A Doll House"

I saw this movie for the first time just after I graduated from University; I had a close friend who was an Argentine immigrant and he had told me some of what had happened in his country. Of course we were barely more than children at the time (we were both twenty-two in 1985), but because of the things he had told me, this film resonated with me in ways I had not expected.

I was a Dramatic Arts major, so of course I had encountered Henrik Ibsen's famous play "A Doll House" which ended with a slamming door that made theatre history for over a century. "The Official Story," despite the tag ending of the little girl in the rocking chair, really ends when Alicia slams the door of her home; her life has been shattered and she has had to face the fact that she was, however unwittingly, partially complicit in it.

This is a devastating film that never gets old for me no matter how many times I see it. Norma Aleandro's performance is as close to perfection as any actor I have ever seen.

Oh God. There's nothing more inconvenient than an old queen with a head cold!
