Why was the old man killed?

I never heard of this movie til this afternoon. I just saw this movie on cable and thought it was wonderful. Great acting and great screenplay. I understand why it won the Oscar. One Question: Why was the old man killed at the office? Who was he and why was he killed? Thanks for anybody who might be able to answer this.

Hi:
The crux of the story is that a lot of men/women disappeared ( appranetly killed ) because they opposed the government. And this old man was I presume one of them.
Thx.

Thanks for the reply!

yeah, i had the same question

i guess he was asking to many questions

but what were they exactly doing to him in that scene?
i couldn't quite see what was happening

reply

Ok, first of all, I don't remember exactly what happened in that particular scene and my english sucks, but from what I recall this guy wasn't killed because he was against the dictatorship. I think he was scared, and that is the reason why he was killed. The other guys obiously were afraid that he might say something that compromise them or put them in jail. Remember that they were all involved in dirt bussinnes (I don't know if this expresion even exist but I guess you know what I mean).

I watched this film for my class called Military and Society in Latin America. We too wondered why Macci was killed. Remember that Roberto had close ties with the General. Also, the company that Roberto worked for had benefited from the junta. By the year 1983, the economy and social issues had made it evident that the junta was going to be booted out of power. People were disappeared to cover up the junta's tracks. Remember how nervous Macci was at the beginning of the film? He wasn't performing in a way that would allow him to survive. We weren't fully sure what his role was in the company, we thought that perhaps he worked in the legal department or something like that.

I hope this helps you understand the film a bit better.

Did you see, in your class, if dictatorship was trained by SOA, Schools Of America, and Torturator was trained by Secret Services of USA and France? thanks in advance

reply

I belive they are about to kill Macci. Whatever the reason, I think the important thing to notice here is that killing and torturing was natural for that people.

I saw the movie twice, and both times I didn't think he was being killed at the office. I remember earlier in the film he talked about how his wife was worried he would have a heart attack because of some business deal or something, and then the day he was in the office he was ranting about being called into court. So I think maybe he had a heart attack, and they covered it up or encouraged it or something? I'm not sure, it's been about 2 weeks since I last saw it, but I don't remember thinking that that old guy got murdered exactly, although his death was a little suspicious.

we watched the movie in our spanish class and as someone said, the guy wasn't killed, he just had a heart attack.

wow. beckerroscow, you're such an idiot. not everybody who comes to this page has seen the film, so by calling your post Why was the old man killed?, you've pretty much just ruined part of the film for people who haven't seen it. Whether or not the scene with the old man dying has any relevance to the plot or progression of the film, it still takes away from the overall viewing experience for those who have not yet seen it. In the future, use your brain before writing such a careless post.

reply

i'm not beckerroscow so it is not i who should be responding to your comment thecorduroysuit but the only idiot is you, if you haven't seen the movie by reading why is the old man killed can't possibly ruin anything for you because since like you said you haven't seen it you can't possibly know which old guy beckerroscow is referring to since there are more than a few old guys. it doesn't ruin the plot because if you know what the movie is about then you know people will be killed or they will talk about people who have been killed. if you don't want to know about the movie before you watch it then don't read the posts before watching it. since we all know most and i emphasize the word most posts are questions or comments from those who have seen the film. the only idiot is you just thought it was worth repeating :)

I don't remember Macci being killed at the office neither. I saw this movie long time ago and I've just seen it again last week. I got the Koch Lorber DVD but I don't remember Macci being killed.
Perhaps I should re-wacth that scene frame by frame or something!
