Extended 'Class Ring' Version

Has anyone out there ever seen an extended version of this movie that includes additional scenes involving Bobby's class ring? The ring is seen several times in the movie, but attention is never called to it. At the very beginning when Bobby is standing on the edge of the cliff smoking, the ring is visible on his finger briefly. He's no longer wearing it while driving the car right before the wreck and for the first half of the movie while working on his "assignment". The ring then reappears on his finger in some later scenes, and at the end of the movie it is gone again.

When we watched this movie on VHS video a long time ago, my dad mentioned some stuff he remembered seeing that was missing from the video, all of it involving the class ring. He said that Bobby gave the ring to Emily right before the race. Bobby later found the ring inside the burnt remains of the car he was driving when he revisited the scene of his death, and put it back on his finger. He wore it for the rest of the movie, finally giving it to Lenny at the end when he was saying goodbye to him. Watching the movie closely, everything my dad said makes sense. Something seems to be missing as Bobby is talking to Emily before the race, then right after Bobby pounds the burnt car as Rafferty approaches on the motorcycle, you see him look closer inside the car as if he sees something. As the camera is close on Rafferty while talking about all of his boys "wandering back to the scene of his demise", you see Bobby turning something over in his hands in the background. From that point on the ring is back on his finger again. You see it on his finger as he lights the cigarette when he reveals himself to Emily, but most prominently as he is sitting at the table with Rafferty's book of arriving passengers and sees Lenny's name in it. At the end of the movie as he is riding off into the sky with Rafferty on the motorcycle, the ring is gone again. Watch the scene as Bobby is saying goodbye to Lenny and it is very obvious what happened. When Bobby extends his hand to Lenny, you can tell by the way he holds it out that he has something in it. Lenny also looks down at Bobby's hand with a surprised expression, but in the very next frame, Bobby's hand is held out completely open and Lenny is looking straight up at Bobby and smiling. After shaking hands and hugging, Lenny turns to walk away and the camera is zoomed in tightly on his face. However, the picture is very grainy and slightly out of focus. You see Lenny look down as he turns to walk away. If the frames had not been zoomed in like that, the picture would not have been grainy and you would have seen Lenny looking down at the class ring that Bobby had just given him!

My guess is that my dad must have seen one of those "test screenings" that you often hear about but never seem to get to be a part of. I've heard about a lot of movies having scenes cut after test screenings, but this is the closest I've ever been to one. I think the class ring scenes would have been good to see, but we can't seem to even get the common version of this movie released on DVD. What would the chances be of getting to see these extended scenes? Has anyone else ever seen this version?

Comedy Central showed the extended 'class ring' version several times. However, it's missing footage that was in the theatrical version, liken when Bobby and Lenny are smoking pot. All in all it doesn't really add anything to the movie.

I think I might have the extended version on video, I'll have to watch it again as I can't remember that well. I do remember them smoking pot though, and they start to get high - literally! They float up to the ceiling until someone (mom or dad) calls out and they fall back on the bed. At least I think thats what happens.

I just saw the pot scene for the first time on showtime. I have it on vhs and have watched it a million times. I felt as if I had missed out. But Im sure at 9 it wouldnt have meant much. :)

Hey,

I have seen both versions if you wanna call em that. The class ring ending and the other version.Yeah the part where bobby goes back to the car wreck if you look at his hand you can tell he is actually holding something(the class ring)
your dad is right some scenes seem funny and some are cut out of the movie depending on what version you watch. The pot scene is in both versions but I'm sure they always edit that out when it plays on tv.I myself prefer the class ring ending when he tosses it back to Lenny and says(give that to somebody you love) I have the original vhs tape and I have it on dvd-r recorded from digital cable I love watching it on dvd because It's awesome quality I can watch it over and over and not worry about the old tape maybe getting ruined.I just wanna say to everyone don't buy this from ebay. I bought a copy on dvd from ebay before I recorded it onto dvd from cable and the one I received from ebay is just a vhs transfer and a bad one at that.

i used to have a really old copy i taped from around 1989 or so. I have since upgraded my from...........you guessed it.............comedy central.

reply

LOL,Lucky you I have been waiting for comedy central to air it so I can record it on a dvd.Hard to find on tv.I think that version add's more to the movie.I have seen that version about 5 or so times but can never see it on anymore.

When a movie is shown on television, they have to get the audience to watch the TV version instead of just VHS or DVD. The best way to do this is to add deleted scenes. "The Heavenly Kid" is no exception. The version on television is usually the 'class ring' edition.

"Jaws: The Revenge" is another example. The version that was released on VHS showed Mario van Peebles dead. The TV version has a different ending with MvP alive.

Well, the real reason for added scenes is to pad the running time. By incorporating those scenes, it makes the film about an hour and 40 minutes, as opposed to an hour and 33. Allowing network tv to not have to break so many times for commercial.

The only "deleted" scene I remember, is when Lenny and Bobby say goodbye. Bobby gives Lenny the wrist bracelet thingy he used to wear as a keepsake. If you'll notice in the regular vhs/dvd version, as Bobby walks away, Lenny's shot looks like the frames have been blown up slightly. This was because the bracelet moment was dropped, and w/o a reshoot, the director was left the blow the frame up so you don't see Lenny looking at the bracelet. Also watch Lenny as he's walking away, he's looking down. Thus him examining the bracelet just given to him.

My guess is that it interrupted the flow of emotion in the final goodbye. Or maybe was too corny. But Comedy Central airs that scene in their version.

I think there's also a moment when Sharon is dancing with other guys and Lenny approaches her. I think she leaves with someone else.

I do recall Bobby giving Emily the class ring right before the race... and when the cars go over the cliff and Emily and Joe hug in despair at Bobby's death - you see the class ring slip off of Emily's finger and one would assume it ended up over the cliff with the wreckage - where Bobby finds it on the return to the point of his demise....
