What Business Do the Brothers Have.....

invading the soda fountain store? Is it really their job to enforce what the boys can and can't do when they're not on the school campus? Those kids should have ganged up on those two miserable old men and beat the hell out of them

reply

They probably would've believed that their spiritual authority over the kids extended over their entire lives, no matter if they were on school grounds or not.

Ya, might find it hard to believe but back then they even made house calls.
Plus its a religion, its dogma extends beyond a school ground.

Ephemeron.

I attended an all boys high school in the Bronx, during the late 80's early 90's, and we had similar Brothers. We joked how our experiences were parallel to the those of the movie.
The Brothers would even wait at the train stations and bus stops (city bus stops, not a private school bus stop), almost a mile away from the school, simplty to ensure we had our ties on, and we were in full proper dress code.
How insane is that?
If we weren't in dress code when we stepped off the bus, we got detention. I mean c'mon! We weren't even in, or near the building yet.

Before high school, our elementary school nuns forbade us to enter a specific candy store across the street. They would go in and get us.

But remember, this was all at the tail end of Vatican 1. Meaning a lot of these adults were really old school. Much more conservative than they are now.

In was in HS during this time (Class of 85) and the big thing was to have a fight off-site so they (teachers) couldn't break it up. One day, during lunch, this principal gets on the overhead and says "If you think we can't do anything about you when you're off campus (dramatic pause)...you're a fool."

I once had a truant officer nearly run us over when a buddy of mine went to his car to get a project from his trunk. Different times, indeed.
