Two questions about this:

1) Is Kurt Thomas' acting really that bad (I'm assuming his gymnastics are great)

and

2) Why the R rating? Is it just for violence?

It's at my local Blockbuster and I'm wondering if it's worth renting or buying?

I'd also like to know the answer to this. In the UK it's an 18 certificate, and in Germany it's classed as a "video nasty" and is essentially banned - how bad is the violence in it?

reply

It's really not so-bad movie. There are untold thousands much much worse.

Well-known Plan 9 is MUCH worse than this, and there are still worse films than Plan 9.

I guess but Plan 9 is bad AND funny! All I want to know is what the R rating is for. Violence? Nudity? Can anyone tell me?

I saw this on BBC1 in uk years ago. It may have been edited for violence but it can't have been that bad for them to have bought in the first place. Its probably part of the whole martial arts will turn our kids to killers panic of the 70's/80's and never got recertificated?

reply

Violence, but not really graphic violence. There's also a crazy dude's ass, and a severed hand in the movie. And a couple of people get bloody when stabbed with pitchforks. I don't really think there's any profanity, unless you count "bastard"

Ratings have changed quite a bit. If this movie was made today, they would have probably omitted the severed hand and the ass and gotten a PG-13.

reply

It got an R rating cause they showed an old mans bare ass in it for more then two seconds.

reply

Unless your culture has a strong aversion to people getting shot with arrows (which happens approx. 176 times), it's tough to imagine Gymkata being banned anywhere. It's quite tame.

Its R rated for the violence, its a little graphic.

reply

I would guess the R is for the violence, but agree that today it would most likely get a PG-13 rating
