$$Spoiler$$ - Whats For Lunch? a lil' help please...

Is this the movie that redefined my understanding of the word 'sandwich'? Or was that some other movie where Americans are sent to Siberia and have to escape and almost get shot by friendlies at the end?

reply

you are correct, and by the way..this movie is great

I saw this film in South Africa where it was released as a theatrical presentation. It made no sense at all and it was only after it ended that we found out that the projectionist had mixed the reels up - quite an interesting couple of hours in the cinema trying to figure out what was going on!!!
'The Day After' was also released in the cinema at about the same time but at least they managed to screen that in the correct order as far as I know!

well, the water drains in the opposite dirction there when you flush the toilet, so it doesn't seem like movie reels should have the same order either, 'no man?

reply

Sorry, budwhitey, but water does not drain in the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere. This myth comes from a misapplication of the Coriolis Effect.

The Coriolis Force is real and will influence things like the movement of large air masses but the effect would be so small in your bathroom that it would not determine which way water rotates when draining from your sink or toilet. The shape of a sink/toilet/bathtub and how level each is would most likely determine the direction of the water's rotation as it goes down the drain. The Coriolis Effect produces a measureable effect over huge distances and long periods of time. But this force would certainly not apply in your bathroom. Toilets, sinks and bathtubs drain the way they do because of the way water is poured in and pulled out. If water enters in a swirling motion in one direction it will exit in the same swirling direction. The configuration of your taps and drains will determine which way the water will swirl and easily overcome the extremely small effect of the cariolis force.

I apologize for being such a stickler when it comes to science, but that's just the way us science nuts are!

well in my country, (as well as the rest of the entire planet), we call it "coriolis effect". Maybe you should go back to physics class, stickler guy...never heard of cariolis, probably why you got this answer wrong
