shareI watched an old taped VHS copy of this yesterday, and still enjoyed parts of it very much. I am going to try and burn it to a CD to keep it, as after 25 years the tape probably had little life left in it. Some criticize for it's accuracy to the cold war and international relations, but this is how most of us "saw" Russia (admittedly in our own minds) growing up in the US. I don't think anyone took it as accurate or historical, but more of a demonstration of patriotism (and yes, anti USSR~but every film needs a villian :-)) via film. David Keith's sarcasm, mixed with passion for love and country are part of a very memorable performance. Malcom McDowell's character is also witty and truly the two demonstrate a bond of friendship that takes them to the brink & back.
shareI've probably read just about every book and memoir on the Soviet Gulag system. Frm what I've read, everything in this movie is very accurate. Nothing in this movie in unusual; that is, almost everything in the movie is commonplace from descriptions of those who survived the gulag system.
David's character was a delight. I admired his undying spirit.

I just watched it on YouTube. Search for Gulag and you'll find it among the many hits for that word. It was uploaded March 2013.
I hesitate to post a direct link as I HAVE seen films disappear from YouTube shortly after a link is posted, so just search for it. YOu'll recognize it as it has two very familiar characters from the film as the thumbnail.
