Ebert's review of Gotcha!

I just ran across this review by Roger Ebert. Not to post the whole thing, but the gist was that he thoght the film would have been more interesting being told from the POV of the woman spy. Her name eludes me at the moment.

And while I dig the hell out of Linda Fiorentino. If that had been the case.. would we have had a rather dry spy thriller? I mean.. nothing wrong with those, but by putting us in the shoes of the rather hapless character played by Edwards it puts you in a world where you don't know what's going on.. how th navigate these strange world.. and stranger land you find yourself in. Would we have gotten Edwards moment cussing out the Germans when he got back across the border? Would it have been all that interesting to see Fiorentino feigning interest in some dorky American? Then falling for him over the course of the film? Well maybe.

But my point.. is that at the time, part of what made (and still does) make Gotcha! unique, in part, was its perspective. Grented there were lots of teen flicks.. but this one was just a bit different, dabbling in the pool of say the British spy thrillers but bridging it with the at the time 80s teen sensibilities.

Not that I don't find Ebert on occasion an interesting read, I just felt that here he seemed to totally miss the point of the film... am I wrong?

As much as I'm a fan of Ebert's and agree with a lot of his reviews, I don't see how this movie would have worked or been entertaining if it wasn't told through Jonathon's perspective. It would have taken the funny right out of it.

The whole charm of the movie is the whole coming-of-age journey experienced by Jonathan. the excitement, the romance, the mystery, the danger, then the maturity. i think it is brilliant as is!
