Trivia or facts about Gotcha! ?

This is one of my all time personal favourites.
Fantastic music, superb comedy, suspense and what a feeling !
I must have watched this one at least twenty times, but I never
get tired of it. I was basically raised with this movie...

Does anyone have any trivia or facts about this movie ?
I really want to find out as much as possible about it.

Also, having been to Eastern-Europe in the 80's, I know how
terrible it was when you wanted to cross the borders. And the
East-Germans were cold as ice and always suspected everyone.
So to me, it's also a realistic view on how things were...

Another thing that makes this movie so enjoyable is the fact
that it's mostly placed in Europe. That certainly makes it
even more entertaining.

*SPOLIERS*

There are several classic moments in the movie, some are:

* When Jonathan (Anthony Edwards) orders "Per-nod" while
in Paris. This is so funny...

* When Manolo (Jsu Garcia/Nick Corri) tells the blond girl in Paris
that he's Carlos the terrorist from Algeria.

* When Manolo tells Jonathan that he can not be seen with Bambi.

* When Jonathan tells Sasha (Linda Fiorentino) that he's 21 (?),
then it turns out he's 18 (when she tells him she likes 18 year olds).
And also that he first says he's had a number of girls, but then when
she says she likes "wirgins", he says he's really a "wirgin"...
"That's twice you've lied. Let it not be a third..." - Sasha

* When Jonathan has rented a car in East-Germany and says that
it's a "German Rent-A-Wreck".

Did I forget something ? A lot, because most of the movie is fun/great !

meanwiddlekid: I started to laugh out loud just by reading your 4 moments from the movie, haha ! I just got to watch it again, haven't seen it for a couple of months now...And I'll be sure to check out if the girl on campus really is "Heidi". Haven't thought of that before.

I also say "A Victor who?" every now and then. And the East German guard is really great as it really was like that back in the 80's. The whole movie has so many great lines ans scenes that you really can't get enough of it. Great music and the locations are also just perfect. And the "Moore, Jonathan Moore" is really the coolest character, hahaha.

Sorry, can't help you with the "girl student" thing, but it sounds right to me.

Great lines, as always (each scene has something special really).
The last quote you had, the 4th, cracks me up each time, ha ha ha !!!

reply

The guard said that after Jonathan turned back, gave a jesture and said two words (blank) you!"

My personal favorite were the first words, in French, that Jonathan said "Voulez Vous couchez avec moi?" Classic!!!

Pie iesu Domine -. Dona eis requiem!

This film is an under-rated gem.

Like has already been said the music is great, some of the lines are brilliant and it's just so easy to watch and with a bit of a twist at the end.

My favourite quotes are "James Bond had Pussy Galore, I can't even get a date"
and when he asks the girl out on a date and she says she'd rather do nothing than go out with him.

Cheers.

Haha, I'm so glad that others appreciate this movie as much as I do. All your quotes made me crack up. It's really an under-rated gem and every time I show it to a friend, they like it.

One line that hasn't been mentioned is the one with Jonathan's parents that goes something like this:

Mom - "It's just a camera"
Dad - "It's nog just a camera, it's a Nikon!"

The whole movie has great lines and I love the music, it's just perfect.

Heheh! I think of this movie each and every time I eat a strudel. :)

Part of my favorite part of the movie is listed in the 'favorite quotes' section.
It is the part where Jonathan is picked up by the Punk Rockers in the van.
They ask him where he is from. He replies 'L.A.'. All the Rockers than say 'We Love it!'. Gotta love that. I had to play that song again just now.

As a side note, back in the 79-80 timeframe, we played the 'Assasin' game at college. I racked up quite a few kills. I screwed up by unknowingly sitting next to my target in a class (after checking his schedule). I asked him if he knew my target and he figured out what I was doing. A missed shot and it was all over. Ah, well...

Quick question...I've not yet seen this movie and friends of mine think the line "Vic Da Lou" is hilarious; however, I have no idea to what they're referring... please help...

reply

Your friends are referring to the line "Avec de l'eau?", which a waiter in Paris says when he wants to know if Jonathan (Anthony Edwards) wants water with his Pernod. This means "With water?". Jonathan replies "A Victor who?" as his french is very poor. A great scene and line, which the movie has a lot of.

Nice to have found you and this discussion!
I first saw this movie in the 1980s, in the German-dubbed version, and only yesterday acquired the DVD - and of course watched it again in the English original. Still great, and the original text is even greater. (Though I can remember discussing it with an American friend - yes, the "Victor who?" line came up, and so did "She wasn't Swedish, she was Swiss!" and I don't know how many other parts!)
On the other hand, I realized the dubbing studio altered a few details which a German audience might have recognized as not quite correct … but the inner-Berlin border was about the way they show it. So far, this movie does have its historical value!
Gonna watch "Gotcha!" again soon …

"* When Manolo (Jsu Garcia/Nick Corri) tells the blond girl in Paris

A Pickup line in '85, in '05 it gets you met at the airport coming home by the FBI.

"Just think, a week in Paris and he'll come home sounding just like Marcel Marceau"

My favorite scene is the whole "Your Visa has expired" scene. The boarder patrol tell him what to do and then go to "window 2". He procedes to window 2 and it's the same lady. She askes every question that she just told him to do. That scene makes me laugh so hard. It has been awhile since I saw this movie.

reply

@ mamaduck71: That's one of my faves too...then when he's leaving...the lady comes running after him and says: "Vait! Vait! Vy ah you in zuch a hurry to leave ze DDR? Your change...from your visa!" She was probably the friendliest East German person in the movie.

"I'd be very happy to be myself if I could remember who I am. Who am I?"

The line I love most is when Manolo and his "Homeboys" blockade the CIA Agents and the following excange occurs (by the way, I added this to the IMDb Quotes section myself):

Duty Officer: All right, move those cars, this is the CIA.
Manolo: You got no juice here, man.
Bob Jensen: Yeah, well this is Government juice, Pachuco.
Manolo: Don't show me your badges, we don't know nothing about no stinking badges.
[the CIA men pull out their pistols]
Bob Jensen: Look, we're not playing games here, greaseball!
Manolo: Neither are we, Amigo.
[about 25 Gangbangers point various guns at the CIA men]
Manolo: Remember the Alamo?

I mean come on, what a great change of meaning for a classic American catch phrase!

I just caught the last 30 minutes of this movie on CMAX this morning. And remembered that the "Remember the Alamo" scene was my favorite from the movie. Laughed out loud all over again. If there was a line out of a movie that I'd personally like to deliver to someone in real life, that would one of them.

I saw this movie with friends in 1985, right before we went backpacking in Europe that summer. It inspired my friend and I to take a side trip to East Berlin. What an experience. Didn't meet any spies, of course, but the whole communist thing and the Wall was unforgettable.

Glad to see that there are people who got some joy out of this movie (still) besides my friends and I.

I loved this movie too. So 80's! The parents automatically thinking their son is on drugs and have to send him to a treatment program. Ha ha ha. Me and my friend used to always mimick that line "meet me at the cafe friedrichstrasa". ha ha ha. or "streudel, apples, nuts, raisins...streudel.".

This movie was fun.

How 'bout a Whopper? No. Make that a double Whopper. With American cheese, and large American fries. And a great big American chocolate shake.

Are you an official here? 'Cause you're officially givin' me a boner.
