What did her dad mean?

I've been watching this movie since I was a preteen; I'm going on thirty now. One scene has always confused me. When she first asks her dad if she can audition he basically says no & then says, "we had a deal, remember?" And she gets upset and yells something to the effect of "it was the muppet show and I was six!" What deal are they talking about? If anyone knows the answer I could finally watch this movie in complete peace.

He says no because they just moved to Chicago (it's a tough city) and he needs to check things out and install a security system on their house before he wants her running around on her own. So he tells her "When you're eighteen then you're entitled to some nightlife. Now we had a deal remember?" To which she replies "We made a deal when I was six and a half and nightlife was The Muppet Show!"

So once upon a time when she was in first grade she wanted to stay up late, either to watch The Muppet Show or just stay up later, and dad said when she's older she can stay up late. Apparently they agreed on the age of 18 being the magic age for this to happen. Now here she is in high school and doesn't think their original deal is fair.

Does that help? This is one of my favorite movies, I've been watching it for 30 years!

they made the deal when all she wanted to do b/c of her age then was watch the Muppet show. At that point in time she believed it was perfectly fair.

But now she has other and more interests beyond Kermit the frog. And her dad is aware of this too. He does not like this. He still wanted the original terms to hold though.
