hypnotized

we are wathing it my Japanese class and as i watch it i just seem to be hypnotized by it it is very odd. Did this happen to anyone else

reply

Yes, between the "off-ness" of the imagery and the mesmerizing music, I found myself pulled in to the movie in an almost trance-like state. Very hypnotic.

Yeah, it put me to sleep too.

To be fair, I've only seen it one time, in the theater, about twenty years ago. One person on this board who enjoyed it said it required multiple viewings, and another claimed a long attention span was a pre-requisite. I think I have a long attention span, but I find that as I get older, I have less and less patience for the "magical journey" genre. My recollection of the movie, 20 years out, is that there were lots of long scenes of a boy sitting on a train staring out the window. I was impressed by the way they animated his reflection in the train window, but that was about it.

Another person here who fell asleep.

Now I'm a person who enjoys good surreal films. Especcially japanese ones (I LOVE Akira Kurosawa's Dreams).

But this film... well, I don't know: I thought that it was tediously boring. None of my surreal artist friends could even attempt to pretend to "get it", as that kind of crowd tends to do.

In fact, I had worries at simply the opening shot of the film: a swinging, slow pan into a painting of a school (?) building. Plus constant repetitions of the same lines over and over.

Basically, the most tedious animated film I had ever seen. But I suggest everyone to at least try to watch it: you never know.

Actually, I didn't fall asleep. I was trying NOT to hang myself because of the monotany. UGH.

Ha! I was out on a camping trip, looking up at the stars for an hour or so (hoping to see shooting stars) and started thinking of this film. Perhaps this is the right way to watch the film. Not like a movie, but like looking up at the stars. Occasionally something will happen. That said, I've read a good number of stories by the author and enjoy them; however I have to admit not entirely grasping the story from which this movie is based. Perhaps this was the translation I read. Either way, I really enjoy the film.
