Double Feature DVD Edited????

I have the Ghoulies/Ghoulies II double feature DVD. But I'm sure I remember there being a brief shot of the womens breasts at the beginning of the film, during the sacrifice scene. When I saw this movie years ago. However this DVD doesn't include the scene. This site says the same about there being brief nudity in the original take a look: http://www.joebobbriggs.com/bmovieguide/g/ghoulies.html
Whats up with that?

Personally, I was completely amused in the scene where the party's 'druggo' starts breakdancing and you can distinctly see drug paraphenalia coming loose from his jacket and pants. Oh, the dodgy hilarity!

I remember seeing it on VHS as a kid and the showed the ladies breast. I remember because they show a bunch of vines erupting from the ladies chest. Plus breast when your a kid is a big thing.

I was a kid when I saw the film in the theaters and I remember that scene as well.

From the "Alternate Versions" link:

"12 minutes of footage were removed from the American release of Ghoulies in order to achieve a PG-13 rating"

reply

DANG IT! I knew it being PG-13 was odd. I specifically remember that exact scene... gay... Still, atleast Ghoulies 2 wasn't cut, but I find that a bit odd also, due to the fact I recall it's theatrical release to be rated R... I have Ghoulies 2 toilet paper...

I own the Ghoulies I & II double feature DVD. And purchased the original Vestron video VHS versions of Ghoulies I & II off of e-bay not long ago. And they are both the same. Except that the videos are fullscreen and the dvd is in widescreen. Thought they might have edited the DVD version because I could have sworn the original was rated r. But that explains it. Wow 12 minutes is a large chunk of that movie! The american release was only 81 minutes. Would be nice to find an uncut version of Ghoulies. Anybody know about european dvd/vhs releases of it?

reply

Actually, BOTH Ghoulies 1 & 2 are cut. Several parts of the first film are cut on R1 DVD, like already said, to make it PG-13, such as the breast shot at the start. Ghoulies 2 is highly trimmed as well.

The annoying thing is, I bought the R2 release of Ghoulies 1/2 double-pack, and it's identical to the R1 one - cut the same. which is REALLY annyoing, because I've seen the first two films uncut on the Sci-Fi Channel.

The American version of Ghoulies II cuts a LOT out.... Most notably, the young guys death in the carnival where the ghoulies tie him to a table and lower the axe. In the uncut version, which actually looks really good, it shows the axe penetrating his stomach several times, close up, and it's really a great effect. Arghh! Crappy cut versions.

So when the original Ghoulies was first released it had the hooter shot in the beginning, and then later trimmed? How are these people claiming to have seen the nudity if it was trimmed before being released to secure a PG-13?

FYI, all the "fullscreen" videos are in fact open-matte, so the widescreen DVD is missing picture information on the top and bottom.

There's an "uncut" rip of the German VHS on eMule that is apparently 90 minutes long, which would appear to be the length of the R-rated version putting PAL speed-up into consideration. Though it may just be whoever ripped it didn't turn the video off after the film finished and the last ten minutes are dead air. Either way, there's no complete sources so it's impossible to know.

The unedited version appeared on First Choice/Superchannel (canada's 80's version of HBO), I had a copy of it on video. During the 80's Superchannel would give a "free weekend" at the movies - where you got the scrambled channels - but they weren't scrambled...It was a ploy to get you to buy the cable channels. During the movies they would have words flash across the screen saying "Sign up now!" etc. I taped nearly every movie that would run during this free weekend. Anyway, they were notorious for showing unedited versions of films. So far, I know this is the case for Ghoulies (yes, there was nudity at the start of the film), Can't buy me love & Teen Wolf.

Why studios release the films cut, is beyond me. Maybe to double dip and release a "definitive" version later...? Either way, it's lame and it shows that studios really have no respect for horror or horror fans.

It's not that we are all dying to see breasts, to me at least, it just makes me really mad to have to think about whatever happened to videotape from 1986 that contained "real" versions of movies and waste my money on dvd's that aren't the movie we saw, loved & remembered.

Boohoo.

I didn't recall the f-words in the Ghoulies 2 movie on VHS. Some are saying it is the cut R version...odd because nothing should have been edited if that's the case. Does anyone know if the PG-13 played with the f-words in the theatre?

reply

Apparently the f-words were indeed cut from the PG-13 print but unlike the cut gore footage they are reinsated on the dvd release. Weird! The old UK video was taken from the uncut print and included all language but some of the gore was trimmed to avoid an '18' rating. No uncut version appears to be available at present sadly. I really want to see the uncut pendulem through chest scene!

reply

It must have been released uncut on video back in the 80's. The video I used to watch had the "boobies and gore" scene at the beginning. The version that was playing on HBO or Showtime a few months ago was the edited version. It's probably the same version thats on dvd now. I doubt the movies are popular enough to get a new "uncut" version on dvd(unless it's a company like Anchor Bay or Blue Underground).

that really sucks that it was cut those 12 minutes and didn't bother to put them back into the DVD release. yeah the review mention a showing of breasts.

I found a rare VHS copy that says to be unrated but after reading the boards I am starting to doubt it's the 12 minutes that is missing, I wonder what the difference is between the PG-13 and the not rated version?

I know they wanted to make money so that is why it was PG-13 for a wided audience. but not to put it back into the American version of the DVD is lame.

reply

I just got my ghoulies/ghoulies 2 pack and on the back it said the first one was pg13 but the second one gets an R rating but there are mulitple ratings...I for one dont really care about nudity and am glad it was gone! I cant remember if it was in mine or not!!!!!! But I liked the second one a bit more cause it was funny and I liked the carnival!!!

Game Over!
