This is the one where Jason is killing handicapped people.

This is supposed to be a cliche horror story about a character going to a institution or hospital where patients start turning up dead and you're left wondering if the killer is back or if the character from the previous movie is killing people. Instead, this is a movie about a character getting sent to a group home for high functioning developementally disabled people. These characters on screen do not appear to be in therapy due to events. There is absolutely no back story or explanation as to why any of them are there. This leaves you feeling like you just accept them for how they are.
In the back of my head I'm always kind of aware that this movie is about Jason killing "retards". So, I start off thinking the movie is stupid then as it progresses and I realize who the characters/victims are then I just mentally give up on the film and then try to just enjoy the humour. This movie is very offensive if you think about it snd worse... its poorly done. I think in the end you almost forgive the franchise for having Jason killing disabled people since in fact it is not Jason.
I just want to know if anyone else sees this group as mentally disabled as opposed to how it was supposed to be as people in therapy.

I always thought the characters in the film just had serious emotional problems. Joey seemed a bit more disabled than the others I suppose. However Robin, Violet, Tina, Eddie etc were definitly screwed up, but not in a disabled way.
I can definitly see why some people would feel bad for this group more than some of the other films. I never thought it was offensive though.

I dont think they were emotionally handicapped, I just think it was a place for troubled youth.

I find that this the most intelligent of the Friday movies. The layers of the story and social commentary reveal themselves over time with repeated viewings and historical hindsight.

Mental health and developmentally disabled people alike are moved away from society and hidden away in the woods. The caretakers are clearly untrained in any sort of clinical, phycological or forensic field and as such the much needed treatment for these young adults is not forthcoming. Society has given up on them because they are different and have decided that the out of sight, out of mind, approach is best.

The Jason figure represents the institutional, neglegent and prejudicial attitudes of society at that time. he is the monster that we created by shunning societies weakest members. He is the slayer of dreams and lives simply because we don't want to treat this group of people in a humane fashion, just because they are 'different'. The cabin in the woods represents the institutions of years gone by were people were imprisoned for simply being born with a disability or developing mental health problems.

The casual viewer may just see some 'imbeciles and morons' being hacked slashed and diced in the usual fashion and possibly take offense or feel bad for these poor disabled kids. However, the more keen of eye will see the messages contained within and eventually reaslize that Jason is not who we thought he was, both in a literal and figurative sense. Jason transforms from being the prison these people are trapped in, to being their freedom. Jason is the utopia of a world where everyone is treated as a human no matter race creed, culture or disability. The walls of the institution have crumbled and those with mental health issues and disabilities have the freedom to live like everyone else.

Jason is the equal opportunities we all advocate for in life. It's just a little unfortunate that as these people walk back into society they are brutally slaughtered by the worlds premier equal opportunity serial killer himself. Good job jason for your high moral stance and lack of subverted 80's thinking and discriminiation. Kill 'em all.

Either that or its just another $h!tty sequel where ideas had run a little thin.

What are you talking about? They're not retarded, they're troubled.

The guy eating the chocolate bar with chocolate running down his chin at the beginning was clearly developmentally disabled.

reply

I'll give you that but the others seemed relatively normal.

And don't forget it was Joey's father who was the murderer, NOT Jason

You mean, where 'Sheriff Roy' is killing handicapped people. which is more offensive to me to have a Friday the 13th film in the middle of the franchise where Jason isn't even the killer.

You hated the first F13 movie? Jason wasn't the killer in that one.

reply

Roy was a paramedic not a sheriff, they were not handy capped either they're troubled youths in a half way home.

SMFH.

reply

Roy's son seemed to be mentally disabled, probably as a way to parallel Jason's original "death".
