I have a cousin who has raved about this movie since it came out 30 years ago and I just never took the opportunity to watch it. So just now I finished watching this and I don't see what there was to rave about. I did not laugh, giggle or smile during the entire movie and to me that is the only reason to watch a movie with Chevy Chase in it, such as "The Three Amigos" and "Vacation" among others. I should have watched it 30 years ago because it would have saved me the 90+ minutes I wasted on this night.

LOL, no matter how great the film, how classic, how beloved, there's always some bonehead who has to make the obligatory "This film sucks" thread on IMDB. It's like a requirement or something lol.

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm sorry but comedy like this just doesn't exist any more. Today's generation wants over the top nasty frat jokes involving body fluids or it just isn't good. Smart humor just isn't for everyone! Disregard the negative comments!

FOr who? Not all young generation likes it (cetainly, asd the indie film Cleanflix pointed out, Utah residents don't share today's tastes///) ever seen Wonder, or Candacer Cameron Movies?

I lived the movie, however I can understand the OP a little because his cousin has hyped it for 30 years. After that, he probably thought this was one side splitter after another. But this is an 80s vehicle and if re released today wouldn't do well. Same with me and cadfyshack. Didnt see it initially and when I did a generation later, it didn't do it for me. Comedy movies today go at an ADD pace, with about 2 minutes per scene, whereas fletch and cadfyshack have 5-6 minute scenes. The subtle humor is lost-

To the OP, I bet you would've judged this movie differently if your cousin wouldn't hyped it up and/or you you've seen it in the mid 80s

That's because it's not funny, it's Chevy Chase chewing the furniture. Of course, I didn't think his other movies were very funny...Caddyshack, sure, Vacation had a few moments, but his constant mugging is such a turnoff. I always thought Chase was an absolutely terrible choice to play Fletch, and that was long before I learned what a hated azzhole he supposedly is in real life. I think Fletch is a more cool, sophisticated, urbane character, even if he is a smartass, and Chase, of course, plays him as a perfect jackass. Read the books, they're far more entertaining.

Always loved the Fletch movies. The Vacations also. It was Three Amigos I didn't care much for.

I find it impossible to watch this movie and be disappointed!!
Top 3 of the funniest movies I have ever seen!!!

You could be a victim of hype.

I had never seen My Cousin Vinny but had heard raves from many people about it being one of the funniest movies of all time.
When I saw it, I enjoyed it but was disappointed. Having seen it now 20 times or more, I came to love it and really appreciate the subtle humor.

You may never like Fletch, but you might if you see it a few more times.

I saw Fletch when it came out. There were some mildly amusing lines but I never understood the love it got/gets. I assumed that it was the cult of personality that demanded Chase be worshiped. He could do no wrong at the time. So I sort of agree with OP.

I liked his other films (even Modern Problems) quite a bit and rank then much higher than this one. I could always detect the true asshole behind the role and that made my enjoyment of his films more for the overall movie rather than him specifically. His recent role in Community was perfect for him and probably my favorite from him. I don't care if he is a jerk IRL.

It's fortunate I'm able to keep my disdain for just about every Hollywood asshole performer (redundant?) from ruining my enjoyment of the shows. Chase is a first class asshole, and a pompous gas bag who believes his own bullshit. His assholeness has gotten so bad recently that's he's no longer funny. But I do like the two Fletch movies. I only saw Fletch for the first time on standard TV, long after Chase's career was over, so I wasn't affected by his run at the top.

Have you seen him on Community? He is supposed to be an ass on it instead of being the supposed "cool guy" who gives off twat vibes. It is a role more suited to his leaning. Very funny.

Bit of a crap shoot. There is a bad season. But the odds are good for you.
To give you an idea of what you are in for, there is an episode where they are hanging out together at someone's home and they order pizza. They show a wildly different scenario play out by showing what happens differently for each character if THEY had answered the door for the pizza. Sort of like the alternate ending in Clue but the whole episode is devoted to it. For a show about a community college, it kinda does what it wants. Same co-creator from Rick and Morty.
