Something that bothers me about this movie

I saw this movie for the first time when I was a teen in the 80's. I remember thinking how awful the rape scene was, but after all she does with Martin I truly believe that it would affect her life with Steven. As marriage gets tough at times I can just see how many times he'd throw that whole thing in her face. It does appear that she is on Martin's side and then she prances around naked in front of Steven appearing to be very much okay with sex with Martin.

Not to mention the fact that in the end Martin escapes. I always imagined that Martin shows back up in her life at another time and day. How would she deal with him then? And if she has conceived Martin's child that would really make things hell for her. I can't see Martin being okay with leaving his child behind after losing one in the beginning of the movie.

The only thing that really bothers me is the fact that she could have so easily escaped when Agnes and Martin go down the chimney. If she had simply stopped running and allowed the guards to catch up to them they would have gotten Martin after a bit of fighting. That bothers me every time I watch this movie.

However, after watching it again today I realize that maybe she didn't want to be saved. It's tough to tell with Agnes. At first you know she's pleading for her life and then as time passes she appears to love both men. I found it humorous that both men tell her it's time to pick a side. Even in the end she still sort of sides with Martin by not telling on him.

She was just a slut that used sex to get what she wanted depending on her current situation.

WTF! A slut? I don't think so. She did what she had to do to survive. If she hadn't done this she would have been passed around the group and then surely killed. She then kept herself alive and protected by keeping the dominant male happy. Sure I think she did begin to care about Martin (remember her knocking the infected water out of his hand?) but she cared the most for Steven, obviously.

Well said. +1

If it was a male/boy? Then what? Or does "poor child" only rule when female?
