Movies capturing this era

OK, so Flesh+Blood had many flaws, but at least it showed just how rough life was in these times, and that is the one reason I liked it. All that brutal stuff that happens was pretty normal back then.

Question is, what other movies capture this well?

This particular time period? None.

There where some movies made after this that show at least equal as much reality then this one.
But they all are set either before (King Arthur, Kingdom of Heaven, Itristan + Isolde, Braveheart) or after (Last of the Mohicans/M. Mann, Rob Roy, The Patriot/Gibson).

The Last Valley, a really great movie. It's set about 150 years later, but has a lot of this feel. The Agony and the Ecstasy is a different kind of movie but set close to this time period.

Prince of Foxes, with Orson Welles.

The Last Valley is the closest I can think of. You may also want to try Aguirre: Wrath of God which is about a Spanish Conquistador.

Overall this was a decent movie but I had some problems with the way the 1500's merceneries were portrayed. I really doubt if they slobbered while eating, threw food at each other and poured wine on the wenches. I think they had more sense than that.

Paul Verhoeven is my least favorite director,
because he takes everything so far over the top.

Be reasonable. Who can honestly say they never do those things?

They do act a bit over the top, especially the mercenary women seem all to be insane. Besides the american accents this has a lot of factual errors in the way people act and speak: the word and even the idea of a scientist and science as something that is based on experimenting was not really known - the word itself is invented much later. The people understand the idea of contagion much too well, usually plague was blamed on divine curse or bad air or whatnot, and of course the plague would not incubate that quickly or kill that quickly either. On the other hand the idea of lancing the boils should not have been that alien. And exactly what sort of a dog is that collar made for?? It's too big for a bear! It looks like the guy should be able to pull it over his head anytime.

"The Profession of Arms" is an italian movie set in 1520's - its really good and is a good historical portrayal - in getman its called Der Medici Krieger.

Check out Queen Margot:

Set in just a generation or two later time period, and pretty dang brutal as well.

More of a slick, 'artsy' look to the film, and more of a serious storyline as well. Based on true events... as to how accurate it stays I cannot say.

Alot of people hate the film, but I think it is great (of course many hate Flesh and Blood as well!)
