I love it!

Yeah this movie is pretty awesome. It's a very unflinching portrayal of the period, that's for sure. I like that it actually shows Europe as it would've been in reality, rather than the romanticized version of many Hollywood portrayals. After all, there's a reason that just over a hundred years later Thomas Hobbes was able to write that life in the state of nature was "nasty, brutish, and short."

If you like this also check out The Lion in Winter. It's a different tone than this film but it also shows life in a medieval castle as it would've been: Dank, cold, and far from glamorous.

I'm watching this film again now; I remember how good it was, the first time I saw it. Trivia section here mentions the director's next film would be "Robocop", another of my favorites!
