A Warm and Enchanting Comedy-Drama

This HBO TV movie was the story of a retired journalist (Robert Preston)whose dead-end existence has come down to caring for his senile wife (Sylvia Sydney)who meets and befriends a woman (Mary Tyler Moore)who is caught in a dead end relationship with a married man (Sam Waterston)and the extraordinary friendship that develops between these two terribly lonely people. This movie was driven by star power...Preston, in particular, shines in a role that should have earned him an Emmy nomination and Moore makes an enchanting leading lady. I loved this movie because it didn't exactly go where you expected it to...you expect this full-bloomed romance to break out between the two, but it never does...what does blossom is a wonderful friendship that teeters on the edge of romance but for a multitude of reasons, can never be. If you can find this one, grab it, you will be pleasantly surprised.

There was a romance in the version I watched. I seem to remember a blanket and a fire.

I'm pretty sure there was romance, a fireplace, a blanket. . . . and a ROMANTIC
ending in the version I taped about 20 years ago and still have.

There is a romance, but it is not overt in a sense that both characters are trapped in other relationships.

it was a pretty OVERT romantic conclusion- two characters ( one a male apparently without clothing, and one a female apparently without clothing) together, under a blanket, holding each other, in front of a dying fire, saying sweet nothings to each other. . . to me that's pretty OVERT or maybe I missed something. . .

"Trapped in other relationships"? Finnegan's wife ends up dying, and MTM's carrying on with a married man can be dropped at any time.
