They didn't make him look ugly, they just put glasses on him. This movie was shot about a year before Stand By Me, and by then he'd started to go through puberty. He looks puppyish in Explorers, but by Stand By Me he's gotten a little taller (and more tanned) and wasn't wearing glasses.

shareThere's nothing creepy about this at all. The OP is clearly young themselves (or was) and said they found River attractive in Stand By Me but not in Explorers, and asked why they 'made him ugly'. I pointed out that he was younger and had glasses, but apart from that not much was different.

What if you married your childhood sweetheart and best friend, would you find them unattractive when you looked at pics of the 2 of you as kids now that you're an adult? I imagine most who find him hot in SBM were either kids or weren't born yet. And they're basing that attraction they had fir him when they first saw the film as children themselves.

I wonder who had him unbutton his pj top? River hated wearing the glasses and would always take them off once his scenes were done, as he was embarrassed to be wearing them in front of the girls on the set. He also came to the audition in a t-shirt with a cigarette pack rolled up in the sleeve (according to director Dante). This gives the impression that River was very aware of his looks and it was most likely River who unbuttoned his pajama top and exposed his nipple. He was going for teen heartthrob status even then.
