The drive in was live?

Either that or was odd showing scenes in that movie as if reacting to them crashing in to the drive in. I know this is done in some movies, but seems weird for this, so I assume there was actually meant to be a set there?

Did ever a thing such exist?

It's probably just the filmmakers teasing us. From an in-universe context, it was pure coincidence.
