open windows on the gun turrets

I just watched this with my daughter for the first time in some 30 years since I saw it on TV. It's a good movie but I wonder if it's standard for gun turrets on starcruisers to have open windows. My 7 year old daughter says it's because they are space people and they breath space air. I am not quite satisfied with this answer.

LOL I love the answer your daughter gave! You're right though, it never really occurred to me.

When I first saw the film that did gnaw at me a little. I shrugged my shoulders at it and decided not to think about it too much.

But ...

If you want the real techno-geeky-science answer; it's a gun port used on worlds with breathable atmosphere in support of soldiers assaulting a position. Or, likewise, used by androids or crew in space suits when the chamber is sealed off for combat.
