Really disappointed to find out they were speaking a made-up language.

I was really into the film, then I read somewhere that they were just speaking jibberish and I was disappointed. I think when they have such a large chunk of a movie in an unknown language, that it should be in a known foreign language and not a made-up language. Think Apocalyto.

Back in the 1980's it really wasn't that big a deal. There were no laptops to check the authenticity.
However I agree with you. Markham learned how to speak it so the implication was that it was supposed to be a known language.

People have even said, and I agree, that at times, some of the dialogue sounded stilted because it lacks natural connecting words real languages have, that and they even threw in some words of English in there too. It's all too wierd and fake for my liking. They should have used a real language, like Mayon or something.

It was supposed to be a tribe that never had any contact with the outside world. So why would they speak a known language? True, the production could have taken the time to hire linguists to create a fake language, but this didn't bother me.
