Worth a fresh look...

I recently re-viewed this movie after seeing it almost 20 years ago. Some old impressions before watching again: Great movie, beautiful cinematography, worthy direction, supernatural sequences distract from otherwise believable story, overdone environmental theme. I am a bit more sophisticated a movie critic now (I hope). New running impressions: Earnest acting, still immensely entertaining and engrossing despite flaws (read on), still great cinematography, would have been a classic with a better script, daring use of nude "actors" to tell the story, a long stretch invokes an Amazon-version of "Deliverance" (another Boorman classic), supernatural sequences fit as part of the halucinogenic tribal ceremonies (and remind me, incidentally, of Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly" video), movie dips into stylized "Rambo"-type action at times, environmental message is well integrated and more of a subtext to the story rather than the main focus although based on a romanticized notion of life in the rain forest. Watching again made me want to turn back the clock on the wholesale destruction of the rainforests, and also made me wonder what it would be like to live the idyllic life of the Invisible People I saw on the screen.
