Would probably appeal to fans of his 60's work

Of Godard's work from the last 30 years, Detective is probably the film that would most appeal to the people who like his 60's work, such as Bande à part or Alphaville, but find his more recent films to be too disengaging. Although Detective is characteristic of his work from the 1980's, in terms of style and approach, it also has the frivolous, anarchic, self-referential quality of something like Made in U.S.A or the aforementioned Bande à part.

It seems a bit unfortunate that this film, and several other Godard pictures from the same period, have hardly any discussion about them on the IMDb.

Yes I agree. I'm just about to watch Détective for the first time and it is a shame how there is actually no discussion about these films; helas pour moi, prenom: carmen, passion.. Or for the later films such as Notre Musique and In the Praise of Love. I really like his later work as all the great ones he kept developing and naturally his later films are better than his earlier ones - which I love as well.

A belated reply to a very old post, but what did you think of it in the end?
