Why bring back original actors so many years after the first?

I can't believe they ever tried to pass this off to the audience at home when Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine were so obviously much older than they were in the original movie. The only way you could take it seriously was if WW II had gone on for 20 years and they were bringing them back late in the war.
