Bad choice for surviving characters (spoilers)

I can't believe which characters they made survive in the end.

I am OK with Lee Marvin and the country hick that flew the plane, but why did these characters survive:

* The Racist: He tried to escape at the begining, often was the first to rebel against the General, and was racist on top of that. He was one of the least likeable characters.

* The tall skinny theif: His crime was stealing from dead American soldiers bodies. He had almost nothing to say throughout the movie and was one of the most forgettable characters. He did not deserve to survive.

I agree, I wanted Otto and Dregors to survive. They were the two most sympathetic and likable.

I wanted Ricco Ross's character (Token Black Soldier, Mk2) to survive.
Jefferson so nearly made it at the end of the 1967 film, I thought Token Black ought to have had a better deal.

Then again, since this one is directly lifted from 1967 Dirty Dozen, I guess it's only in keeping.

I *liked* Riccos's character, though. His whole background of being a former cop showed such promise. The one shining light among a bunch of scum.
