Susan's surname

Her surname isn't given in the film, or in the book that was based on the screenplay. But wikipedia gives her surname as Thomas, and a google search for Desperately Seeking Susan and Susan Thomas reveals many people think this is her surname. Where do people get "Thomas" from?
