Just watched that scene...

Are you talking the scene just before she got grabbed in the ally way?

As she is running she yells..."taxi...taxi"
Just before that scene she's sitting in his chair and she says..."SIR"!?

"Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive le sacre mercenaire."

I wondered that at first watch myself.
I think the sound was just the building's 'machinery' coming on, such as an air compressor.
The man was evidently guarding something, likely equipment.

As to why he didn't return:
I assume that when he went out to check to see if the man chasing Roberta was gone, the man either knocked him out or killed him.




I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
