Why was Susan written to be so skanky? A thief is not a free spirit.

Even when I first saw the film when it came out, I was confused. Madonna was the heroine; she was beautiful, cool, fun, resourceful and sexy. But why did the plot require her to be a con artist and thief, someone who hooked up with a mobster, presumably had sex with him, and then robbed him while he slept? Surely there would have been other ways for her to be in possession of the stolen earrings.

Well.... I know Madonna is a pop star, but the only quality answer I can give you to your question is because that's rock n roll.... Rock N Roll!

This was the '80s, and that was the decade of excess.

They wanted to show Susan as a rebellious *wild child*.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?

I would imagine it was to emphasize how polar opposite she was from Roberta. And who says she was a slut? She was young and unmarried...She was allowed to have sex. If she were a guy and had slept with more than one person she would be considered just sexually active...Not a slut. She's only regarded as a slut because of sexism

Exactly. Roberta was a caged bird and Susan a free spirit, having Susan as more sexually adventurous and fun just made sense to the plot. I personally never saw Susan as a skank, she seemed to hold the power in all her relationships and live by her own rules. That seemed more liberated than promiscuous to me.

Seriously, she was meant to be the person who did everything a New Jersey housewife would never, EVER do, someone living the opposite of a settled, stifling, boring existence.

And that's why we never see too much of Susan, we just get glimpses of her doing things a housewife bored housewife would never do, and none of the downside of her lifestyle. We never see her stuck without a place to sleep for the night, or being beaten up by some guy who woke up in time to keep his wallet.
